Dirty Darn- how can I "fix" this?

I am knitting the Aeolin shawl from Knitty.  It has taken me forever and I can finally see the end in sight....  Like 24 more rows and then it will be done.  But.....  I looked at one of my Nupps tonight and somehow it isn't there!  It is just a length of yarn untwisted!  Soooo.  I am not going to rip it out.  I mean I can't.  I won't.  I don't care if it is the lazy way out- but I have been working on this stupid shawl for about 2.5 years and I can't look at it much longer.  If that is the only solution I will burn it.  Can I somehow wrap the yarn and use some thread and kind of stitch it down?  I know it is wrong- I just don't care.  If I do this should it be pre or post block?  What other option do I have and what if all of them do this?  I hate Nupps!!!

Thanks in advance for your help ladies!

I'd wrap the thread and do a darning stitch that imitates the knit stitch.  Look at it like how you'd stitch for grafting and have it enter the next knit stitch to be either smooth or ridged in accordance with the pattern.
