Just beginning child led weaning. Hard stools for baby.

My LO is nearly twelve months old. I had wanted to wait until one year to begin child led weaning, but it seemed my child was ready for food a few weeks earlier than the one year mark. I began with sweet potatoes, sweet peas, broccoli, asparagus, green beans, sliced kiwi, blueberries, carrots, and pear, a tiny bit of mashed potato on a couple of occasions. Now, just a couple weeks later and my LO eats three meals a day. I'm still nursing my LO between food meals and usually after eating, my LO wants to nurse in addition to consuming distilled water while eating the actual food. Over the past week my LO has had harder stools and bits of blood have been on the stool on more than two occasions. Also, while passing the stool, my LO cries like there is something frightening happening. No tears, so it does not seem to be an emotional cry. Also, my LO sometimes shakes and feels slightly warmer to the touch than usual. I sometimes try to nurse my LO to soothe and sometimes that helps and other times it doesn't. A friend of mine seems to think maybe the new sensation is frightening, which seems likely. I'm just wondering why my LO's stools went from being totally liquid-y to totally big-kid like within a short time... and with all the nursing that is still occurring... I don't quite understand it. I must have given my LO half a cup of blueberries between yesterday and this morning and that still didn't soften the stool, like I was hoping for.

Can anyone else relate to this? Oh, I forgot to mention that my child doesn't seem to have any trouble passing to stool, like constipation, just discomfort while it's actually occurring. I'm desperate for answers because it breaks my heart to see my baby so upset while going to the bathroom.

I forgot to mention rice cakes, which seemed to be the cause of the harder stool... at first. I have since stopped the rice cakes, even though I only allowed maybe half a day, if that. Even still, the harder stool have been happening without the rice cakes.

My little one needs to drink quite a bit of water (on top of nursing) and to have lots of fruit in his diet to avoid hard stools. He drinks at least 3 oz with meals and 2 oz with snacks. I try to give him berries, prunes or pears each day as well.

Prunes as noted above are great for easing the passage of stools. I had the same issue with my son but I started solids at six months which I later regretted. With my daughter, I started at a year and didn't force it - if she was interested, I gave her a bite of this and that but didn't instigate a routine. She didn't have the same issue.

Reflexology is a great tool to have for easing the discomfort. You massage the points on the feet that correspond to the stomach/intestines/rectum and it really helped with my son along with the prunes!

Good luck!

Thank you for the shared info. I began giving my LO a bit more fruit and that seems to have helped a lot. Regarding the water, I always offer water but for whatever reason, my LO usually refuses it (and it's distilled, so very pure). Instead of the water, my little one always wants to nurse following a meal. I don't mind it, but I think more water would be helpful. In time, I'm sure the desire for water will come. :)

Anything with cow's milk in it can cause constipation.
