Infant Underwear/Training Pants Recommendations?

Thread Starter

I have seen a lot of infant underwear, but most of them are really expensive. I just bought a couple of infant training pants on amazon.com, but they have yet to arrive. Does anyone have any recommendations for affordable infant underwear or training pants? (not disposable training pants) My son is 7 months, but he's got some fat chunky legs and he usually wears 12 month size clothing.

A lot of people like gerber training pants because they are cheap, and they just might fit your son. They start at 18 months, but people say they can shrink. I believe some people double up to make them fit better, or take in the sides if you sew a bit. Bright Bots are also not too expensive. I liked both of these for certain situations when I only needed very light back up at home. I'd also check out websites that have gently used trainers or undies on them. Places like diaperswappers are a great place to be able to try a wide variety (side snap, waterproof, velcro, etc.) for cheap. There is a potty training and even EC section where people sell their used gear on that site. Also, if you do sew (or want to attempt to), Do It Yourself EC has free patterns for a variety of tiny trainers and other things EC too! You could also check out some manufacturers websites 'seconds' or 'trades' sections. My first trainers I got as a trade from Cloth Thoughts I believe (not sure if they are still around), and I thought the concept was so cool that I do trades on my site sometimes too. And lastly, some of the EC Stores frequently have specials and promotions that you can find on their facebook pages or by subscribing to their newsletters.

Only bad thing about Gerber is they are now owned by Nestle.  I recently bought Lovable Friends training pants for my 4 month old.  The smallest size they come in is 2T but they do shrink a good bit.  The waist is pretty good for my average-sized 4 mo old (currently 15lbs 14oz and 25.5" long).  The leg holes are still very big on him though (these training pants are oddly shaped), but the nice thing for now is that I can throw in an insert for extra absorbency in case of a miss and it doesn't get in the way of the legholes.  Best thing about it is that I got 15 pairs for $30 so they are really really cheap!

ETA: My absolute fav training pants, though are the side snap ones from continuum family concept!  They are pricey but oh so soft and absorb a full miss very easily, and the side snaps are very convenient to have!

Can you sew at all?  I sewed DS's trainers and they were super easy (I mean it, I hadn't sewn anything since a pair of boxers in grade 8).  I used this pattern (no snaps) and bought my fabrics here.  I used PUL for the outerlayer so we can use them out of the house without worrying about misses and wet clothes, but you can also do them with a stretch cotton for the outerlayer.  We used bamboo diaper flannel (2 layers) for the soaker, and I upcycled flannel pj pants of DH's for the inner layer.  The only tricky part was figuring out how to sew on the fold over elastic, but I got the knack of that by the 3rd pair.  DS was about 7 mos when he started wearing them as well, and I sewed size smalls.  They lasted until he was maybe 12 mos, and now he's in the size mediums as a skinny (24lbs) but tall (34") 18 month old.

We are just starting to try EC with our 7 month old babe and I've been researching EC clothes to sew for her so this was really helpful, thank you!!
