I'm using Charlie's Soap and the package explicitly states that it is not a disinfectant. So - how do I disinfect diapers, short of using bleach? (If it gets complicated, I'm just switching to a new detergent!)

I've never washed diapers, but it is recommended you wash underwear in 60 C to make sure bacteria etc. is killed, isn't it? So I would imagine washing your diapers on hot would do the trick, just as you disinfect your bottles etc. by washing on hot.
post #3 of 81/19/12 at 11:01amYes, HOT water is one way. Also vinegar is a natural disinfectant. However, just like bleach, over use can wear out your diapers. I use about 1/4 cup of vinegar in the wash every couple of weeks. Also, if you have very hard water, excessive use of vinegar can cause ammonia buildup. Mixing Baking soda and vinegar (50/50) can help neutralize the Ph in the water.
Just a quick review. I did like Charlie's Soap but I stopped using it b/c of my hard water I had to use 2-3 scoops per load to get my diapers clean.
Good luck.
post #4 of 81/19/12 at 11:19amMost detergents aren't disinfectants, so make sure you're switching to a system that does what you want, not just one that doesn't have disclaimers.

I always just wash hot with detergent. I mean won;t the dryer kill any bacteria anyway?

post #8 of 81/21/12 at 10:51amI usually do a long wash with hot water. Pre-wash with baking soda and vinegar. Regular wash after. Don't use too much detergent. I have never used bleach and never had a problem. Clean diapers every time!- How do you disinfect cloth diapers?
