Doula work and child care

I'm currently working on birth doula certification.  I've completed just about everything except two certifying births.  I have an 18mo DS and a great support structure, DH job is fairly flexible and lots of family who love to watch DS.  The problem is, DH just recently applied for a couple jobs that, if accepted, would mean a move about an hour and a half away...  We're not sure how flexible the new job would be yet.  What are your thoughts on how much child care support is necessary?  If DHs job is flexible is that enough?  I'm afraid that's not enough and I won't really get to do any doula work...

As a doula I need to be able to go to a birth and not look back.  For me this means rock solid childcare for my youngest.  I need to go to a birth knowing that my support system will engage, pick my youngest up from school, get snacks and meals, homework done, bath, and bedtime and then get them off to school the next day and repeat the process until I can resume my role as Mom.

For some births that means 24+ hours of care sometimes literally days.  Other births I'm gone after bedtime and back before it's time to get up and ready for school.  There's just no predicting how long I'll be gone.

This is where I'm at too.  I have a 4 year old and an 18 month old.  I've booked my first birth for the end of March.  I'm working on getting a good network of people for watching my children when I'm at a birth.  I think it's really important to have a backup plan, a backup-backup plan, etc.

I've been a doula for several years now - you have to have a totally reliable friend or family member you can count on who is willing to drop everything and come in the middle of the night, etc.  This caused me to take many breaks in my doula work over the years but as they get older it does get easier.  Some doulas find a good/flexible nanny...you just have to do what works for you and provides for your children too.
