what can I put in a pot to fill it so to use less soil?

I found some large flower pots and want to grow some flowers in them (not sure ceramic pots are safe for food). The problem is that they are so big. We really need to budget garden. These pot will take half a bag of soil. Is there something I can put in them so I use less soil?

thanks

I got pop cans from the neighbor kids, squashed 'em a bit and filled my pots half way. Worked great.

I've used wine corks and foam packing peanuts, and they worked fine.

broken bricks, rocks, marbles, broken pottery

and yes, ceramic is safe for food, as far as I know!

My newest garden beds are big huge livestock watering containers.  4'x4'x5' or so.  I had a pile of broken bricks that got tossed in the bottoms of them.  Plus lots of rocks.

If you don't mind plastic, empty water or pop bottles work well because they don't add a lot of weight to the pot.
