Fun games for phonics

My son absolutely does not want to learn to read. He just turned 6 and that is okay.

However, I know him and his stands against stuff are often fear based and not based on his actual interests. For example, tonight we were going to watch a cartoon about the Wright brothers and flight. We knew he would like it and he had a huge fit that he did not want to watch it. We said that was perfectly fine, that he did not have to watch it. Then my husband and I sat down to watch. Our son got between us on the couch and really liked the movie. So that's how we have to do a lot of stuff with him--we just do something and he realizes he wants to participate.

I am looking for a way to do phonics with him that is fun. Just sitting on the floor and playing games. I have a math book like that. http://www.amazon.com/Family-Math-Jean-Kerr-Stenmark/dp/0912511060/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1327040431&sr=8-1 He just thinks we're playing games and has no idea he is building math skills.

So I'm looking for a way to do that with phonics. I have seen good reviews on Happy Phonics http://www.lovetolearn.net/catalog/product/07073, but at $50 with 9 hours of prep work to cut out all the cards, etc. I'm a little leery of ordering it.

Anyone used Happy Phonics or know another game based way of doing phonics/reading?

Thanks

We play car games.  I like to play games in the car because I have a captive audience <grin> and they are bored.

A favourite games is: name a word that starts with the "D" sound.  You can make it more complicated - such as ends in "st" or rhymes with "bar."

so that we can help suggest games/activities.  Where is he at in the learning to read process?  does he know all the letter sounds?  Does he know diagraphs (like ch, sh, ck)?  How about Sight Words?

(great site for sight words Kinder-2nd grade plus) http://www.mrsperkins.com/dolch.htm

Are you open to screen time?  Or Apps?

we LOVE www.starfall.com

and Lake Shore Learning has a couple of great phonics apps

looking forward to chatting more on this

He's done starfall for quite some time and knows all the letter sounds. He seems to have gotten bored with starfall so I don't think he knows any blends. He knows a few sight words, but when I try and figure out what he knows, he clams up.

I was able to get a hold of a used Happy Phonics kit. Even if he's not into it, I can save it for his little sister.

Our son has always been verbally advanced. At 29 months he said, "These flowers smell like pollination." We do play the car game previously mentioned and he does fine with that.

I am interested in apps. I have an android, my husband has an iphone. However, my husband doesn't let the kids handle his phone as much as I do.
