My DS is a little over 3 and for the past few weeks when he's upset or frustrated, he will let out a blood-curdling scream. It is so loud and long that he can't hear anyone speak to him. It usually is directed at a sibling, I haven't seen him do it at school with friends.

It hurts my ears so much that I often resort to shouting his name at the top of my lungs to get his attention as I'm trying to reach him physically. Unpleasant, I need to figure out something different. If he cuts it short before I get to him, I'll say "use your words instead of screaming" and he will. Over the last few days I've been bringing him to his room when he does it (getting him away from the other kids) and am able to stay calm and positive in there with him. If he screams again, I leave the room and come back when he stops. He is good at using his words but when he's frustrated he sometimes needs me to prompt him.

Has anyone had a 3 yr old do this? What strategies did you use? I thought my approach was generally a good one (minus my shouting) because he was having these awful tantrums last year and when I took him to his room to calm down, it really helped and he stopped having them. But this is still going after several weeks. I'd love to hear what other mamas do in this kind of situation! Thanks.
