Working mom in Europe

Thread Starter

I've been meaning to join here for several months and am finally making the time to sit down and do it! Yay!

My DD was born in June 2011- our first baby. We live in Europe and I work full time while my husband stays home with her. I don't like having to pump at work and would rather feed her directly all the time, but that's just how things are. She and I are great pals when I'm home and I nurse her to sleep every night.

Overall we've had a very pleasant experience here as new parents, although sometimes we feel a little isolated because of the language barrier. English is the official language at my office and I speak the local language ok, but still am not fluent. My husband barely speaks it at all. Little things like finding a babysitter or figuring out how to talk to the nurse at the doctor's office can be a challenge. But, our DD will likely be at least bilingual if we stay here and our healthcare is much better than what my friends describe back in the States, so we're happy to be where we are. Sometimes I just wish I had my mom, mother-in-law, or sisters here. It's hard to call them for advice because of the time difference. So, I'm really looking forward to being a part of these forums.

Hi,

I don't have a lot of time to post right now, but when I had DD1, I was in the same position as you, living in Europe w/ first baby far away from family. My DH also stayed home w/ her and I worked (also pumped at work!) We were fluent in the language, which helped, but the systems were so different, I'm not sure that helped sometimes!

Feel free to PM me any time!

Thanks for the replies! I'll check out the Europe forums- I'm in Austria but I'm sure I'll find some kindred spirits in all of them.

Ragana, good to know you were in the same situation!
