Trimesters and Weight Gains/Losses - Page 4

Geek alert!!!!

So, when I was pregnant with my first, I was working as a financial analyst on Excel spreadsheets all day, and it made perfect sense to keep track of my weight week by week, and analyze everything. I decided to do the same with my second, and now am tracking my weight again with my third. I was really amazed to see how, despite slightly different starting weights, it seems like my body follows the same weight loss/gain pattern during pregnancy. Here's a screen shot of the graph I made with the data:

preg weight.JPG

1st preg: lost 11 lbs 1st tri, gained 17 lbs over starting weight total

2nd preg:  lost 9 lbs 1st tri, gained 17 lbs over starting weight total

both pregnancies, had a funny weight loss dip at 29 weeks, for no apparent reason!

both pregnancies, lost 10 lbs the first day after birth, 5 lbs the following week, and then very slowly dropped back to my ideal weight of 125 over the next year.

I just find it so fascinating that, without trying to influence my weight gain or loss, my body followed the same pattern the first two pregnancies, and seems to be doing the same so far, this time, too!

ahhh I love data visualizations! I wish I had done this with DS.. would be cool to compare

This is fascinating, ladies! I don't usually weigh myself at home because we have a terrible scale, but I'm thinking of investing in a better one.

I gained about 10 lbs in the first 14 weeks and I can feel it! It's all in my midsection, as far as I can tell, although my hips seem to have widened, too. I am sure it had a lot to do with not being as active as I usually am, which always keeps my metabolism up. I tend to eat very well in general and used to run and do other physical activity all the time. I've still been eating well, but definitely more, especially at breakfast. I've had more work to do in general and with wacky weather I just haven't gotten out of the house as much as I used to and then crash at night with no desire to turn on prenatal yoga or do squats. I need to kick up my activity now that the weather should be more consistent. I'm not worried...yet. I had a health screening a few weeks ago for work and everything was as good as it usually is (low total and low bad cholesterol, highest ever good cholesterol, good fasting blood sugar). With the weight gain my bmi is still normal, but I used to be around the very low range of normal. I still get ravenously hungry. I think I am more responsive to hunger now, though. I used to not mind feeling hungry but now it makes me more anxious.

Mama Chickadee - very cool chart!

andaluza I think I gained 10lbs the first 8w with DS. . . this pregnancy I feel like Im about 8-10lbs up at 16w.. I will be curoius when I go in for my weigh in.. Ive been sick all month and barely exercised, havent been eating or sleeping very well so Im just hoping its not really really high.. I had such a bad risk for GD I have to be sort of careful..

Love the chart Chickadee!!!

AARGHGHHGHGH! I'm still not over my pre pregnancy weight. I'm 207 and I was about 211 when I conceived. ARGHGHGHHGHG. I was down to about 195, thought it was 198, but my scale is 3-5 over my midwives' scale. So i'm going by theirs, because that's what's in my chart. thumb.gif

With my first kid, I was about 215 by this point. I'm hoping that by the time i get to 20 weeks, i'll be to my pre pregnancy weight, and if I'm careful , i'll only gain 12-15 over that. (as you can see i'm on the heavy side, but this isn't a concern for the midwives in so much as they said i can go 20-25, but I have BAD bursitis in my hip and 20+ over my pre pregnancy weight will have me in a WORLD of pain so I'm going to try and eat healthier and be more active this time around)

Wow, that is a super cool chart, Mama Chickadee! And so interesting that your body followed basically the same pattern both times, and seems to be doing it again!

interesting.. so Im up only 6-7 lbs at 17 weeks with twins..  I think a lot of that has to do with the lack of activity the last 4-6 weeks and then the massive episode of sickness causing me to not eat well or often or much..

hmmmm..

Ithappened, hope you start to feel better soonhug.gif.  I am right where you are, only I am 18 weeks with one.

ithappened, I'm up 7 pounds with one at 17 weeks too.  I'm sure being sick had everything to do with it.  I'm glad you got to the ER.

I'm using a tracker that does the chart thing too, so it's kind of fun to see the little growth spurts in there.

I'm 17.5 weeks and am back at my start weight (lost five pound and have gained them back).  I worry I'm going to gain a ton in the next 24 weeks though, as my appetite is back and then some.  I almost liked the morning sickness a bit...I tend to eat a lot and it was nice to have a natural feeling of not wanting to eat constantly if that makes sense.  I'm trying to keep healthy food around to much on because if there is a chocolate bar (or two) I will eat it!!

I'm up 3 pounds at 16 weeks.

I gained 10 lbs!! I am 16 weeks. I actually only wanted to gain 20 lbs this entire pregnancy, so I am a bit disheartened.

The weird part is, that I am working out this pregnancy where I did not the last. And it seems like I shouldn't be gaining anything.

Oh well. Hoping bb is healthy & happy in there!

LilyTiger -- you say you are using a tracker that charts your weight, what are you using?

dovemama with DS I think I gained 10lbs the first 8-10w but really I had almost no weight to lose PP.. so I wouldnt worry either, some of my friends who gained less then me are still trying to lose the weight PP where mine just came off..

moremadder, the one I have is through a clinical trial I signed up for that tracks women's weight gain and loss postpartum.  It even shades in the range of normal (depending on how much you'd like to gain) so you can see how far above or below the average and/or min/max you are for your goals.  Pretty cool.

But DH has a pregnancy tracking app on the iPad that he's been using to track my weight, moods, and symptoms, and that charts it all for you as well.  I'll track down the name of it when I get a chance.  Also, DH has been having a little too much fun with that app in my opinion.  When I didn't gain much weight for a few weeks, he threatened to "report" me to the iPad app.  I'm not sure what the enforcement mechanism is there, but it was hilarious the way he said it.

dovemama, did you just start working out or were you working out pre-preggo?  If you just started working out, it can cause water retention and some weight gain thanks to an increased appetite and muscle growth.  It will even out over time if that's the case.  If not, as other people said, I wouldn't worry about it either way.  As long as you're eating healthy and exercising, there's not much more you can do to control what your body thinks is necessary.

I was up 7 lbs at my 16 week appt.  I know how silly it sounds, especially as a person who seems to fluctuate 5 lbs at any given time, but I did gain about a pound more than I wanted to last month.  Agh, I hate how I sound saying that - I can gain or lose a pound in the bathroom sometimes, but I do want to keep it low to avoid the problems I had with my first.  I know I need to get more physical activity, but we've been sick here, and it's still so cold out.  I can do better.  I don't think it's going to help that no one ate the ice cream we got for Elsa's birthday party so that's just sitting here tempting me...

Ninetales I hear you, the being sick really takes the wind out of my sail. I was hoping this pregnancy would be really healthy and instead Ive spent the last 3 months terribly sick and not doing much.. and the weight gain.. ugh. I have to say I dread that part the most about all of this.. Not having my clothes fit anymore but nothing having anything else to wear just makes it all the more uncomfortable.. literally.

I wouldnt be too hard on yourself though, people tend to gain at different times during their pregnancies so it could be you gain early and not so much later..

I'm 15 weeks and I've gained 1 lb, but that's b/c I have really strong food aversions right now.  I can't eat red meat and other foods will just randomly turn my stomach.  It's getting really old.

I'm in the same boat as you. I'm also having random morning sickness again. Yay! greensad.gif
