Teething

hola,

I'm noticing my little guy's new love affair with his fists--he can't get enough trying to gobble them. He's also drooling more, and I'm thinking he'll need to start wearing bibs any day now. Notice this with your babes, too?

Definitely noticing more fist gnawing and the subsequent drooling, but I don't think in our case it's teething.  All my kids have sucked/gnawed on their hands/fingers and that causes them to drool, but my first two didn't get teeth until 6-8 months old.  If your baby isn't drooling without the hand sucking, then I wouldn't assume teething.  But if the drool is happening all the time, it's possible.  Though babies can teethe for months before the tooth actually pops out!  How old were your first two when they got their first tooth?  Ugh... teething is not at all something I'm looking forward to again!

Yeah, he's drooling and sucking on his fists. My dd got her first 2 teeth at 4.5 months, and ds, at 5 months. We'll see. He's not any crankier(for now), though, which is good.

Coralie has started to drool a bit more (unrelated to fist sucking) and she's just starting to figure out how to keep her fist near her mouth.  She isn't very oral, so sucking on something it's a high priority.  My DS got teeth at 4mo and my DD1 got her first at 4.5mo, so I suspect it's coming sooner rather than later.  We're still a couple months out though.

My daughter is also drooling constantly, even when her hands aren't near her mouth. I was giving her my pinky to suck the other day to soothe her in the car and I swear I can feel her little teeth all lined up under her gums! They are hard and sharp feeling. I don't really know anything about how teething works because she is my first, but I was surprised at how hard her gums were. She also has always had a tough little bite - not looking forward to teething whilst breastfeeding!

She is almost 10 weeks, btw.

Drooling and fist-sucking here too.  I remember this happening at around age 2 months with my first son and thought it was teething, but it wasn't.  It's actually just a developmental thing- their salivary glands are really kicking in right now, and they are also now able to bring their hand to their mouth.  So, it's normal for all babies to start drooling between 2-4 months, but it's also interesting that yours (and Abra's) get their first tooth at 4-5 months!  Wow!  (Not that that is abnormal either, though definitely on the early end of the spectrum).  I am not jealous LOL- I hate teething, and would like to put it off as long as possible :-)  My son got his first tooth at 9 months- but he had been eating finger foods since 6.5 months.  Those teeth under the gums are definitely lined up and ready, but the only surefire first sign of teething, in my opinion, is a swollen area on the gums.

Dd didn't get her first two teeth until about 8 months and then didn't get any more until over a year old.  I know they say that this is better for the enamel, but frankly, those kids that I knew that got their teeth early and quickly had an easier time of it.  Dd would be crazy irritable, not sleep, and break out in eczema for weeks, weeks with each tooth.  Ds1 started at 6 months and got them pretty quickly.  It was so much easier for him.  Of course his temperament is more laid back as well, but I think that quicker teething helps.  But I also only have a sampling of two!  LOL!

My two kids both had two teeth on the day they turned 4 months. So I'm expecting another early teether here!

DS1 got his first 2 at 3.5 months and had 6 by 6 months.  DD got her first 2 just before 7 months.  All different donors so I don't know what to expect.  He is a hand eater tho.

TONS of drooling and fist-sucking here, too.

Eli is almost 12 weeks old now, he has had 2 molars poking since he was 6 weeks old, and two more are poking now - so 4 in total.  We have been suffering through some bad days because of it, Wednesday was especially terrible he cried all day ... was only happy when I let him bite on my finger or he chomps my nipples (ouch!).  My midwife couldn't believe at our 6 week checkup that he had 2 molars that were so close to the surface.  If I leave my fingers close to his mouth, he try to move my fingers into his mouth, and slide them across his gums. Constant knawing on his hands, and biting of his own fingers.  And TONS of drool.  Been putting bibs on because he drools so much that his clothes get soaked right through.  Ick ... :)

Yup, I didn't even know my DS was teething until he had teeth.  Since I wasn't expecting him to get teeth at 4mo it totally caught me off guard.  He got his teeth young and very quick, which I found to be much easier than my friends with slow teethers.  He had all of his teeth by 13mo!  My DD1 took a little longer, but really it wasn't any big deal.

Levi seems to be teething. He has 2 buds and white bumps on the bottoms. He's drooling like crazy and fussy during the day. And chewy.

My kid will actually chew on anything you put near his mouth. You wave ANYTHING two inches or so from his mouth and he attacks it, LOL.

His drooling is only with the chewing though.

But I have noticed bumpier gums? This is my first, so I'll be interested to see when they start poppin' out!

Éowyn is very drooly too, but my others tend to get their teeth starting around 5-7 months so I'm not expecting hers anytime soon.

There are two indents on Avery's bottom gum where his teeth will emerge.  But I don't expect anything for another 4 months or so.

Oren had his bottom two teeth cut through last week, but they've receded now - and are like what Jaimee described, two tooth-shaped indents in his gums. I wonder when they'll come back -other than a little fussiness and waking more than usual at night he had no real teething symptoms until after I noticed their eruption. Then he was doing a lot of gnawing, and drooling, and getting a bit of teething rash on his cheeks. My sister was a precocious teether - she had four teeth by 3 months. My mom said she was born with erupted teeth, but they receded for a couple of months. DD didn't get hers until 6 months.

Greta has multiple teeth working their way up. I can feel 4 distinct bumps on her bottom gums and 4 small bumps working their way down on top. I first noticed DD1's first tooth the day she turned 4 months old. I had no idea she was even teething, although she had run a pretty high fever the day before I noticed the tooth. She always got one tooth at a time and it would take her a couple of months to break a new one through. She also always ran a high fever right before it broke through, although she was never really that cranky about teething.

Greta is apparently going for more than one at a time so it'll be interesting to see how she handles it. She was really fussy yesterday and slept a ton, then slept restlessly all night last night. She also had a low-grade fever during the day yesterday. I'm thinking it's from the teeth. At the rate she seems to be going, I'll end up with a 6 month old who has half her teeth already. She is gnawing on her fists and drooling a lot, but that's not really out of the ordinary for her. She's always loved gnawing on her hands.

Harlan has been trying to eat his fists and sorta slobbery more.  He for sure is starting to chomp down if a finger is in his mouth.

I know some of you already know (like Sarah) b/c I've seen them in pictures posted, but amber teething necklaces can really help.  For those that haven't heard of them, the necklace is NOT for chewing on... the amber against the skin has analgesic properties.  At least that's the idea.  It does seem to help, I think, plus they're cute!
