Abby, I was pleased to find out that the school dd1 will be attending does serve at least some special needs kids. I was researching the school (googling like mad) and came across an article about a student there who competed as a Special Olympics athlete in 2010. 

We just turned in our paperwork today and I'm anxious to see what this year will hold for dd1. Fingers crossed it will go well, but if not we'll be able to go back to our great local middle school. I'm wondering what dd2 will want to do when she's middle school aged.

So just thought I'd report in that today is the first full day at the new charter middle school for dd1. Yikes! She had orientation last Friday for a half day and that seemed to go well so I'm hopeful that today will, too. She was having a good bit of anxiety about it, but she was in pretty good spirits this morning. I'm anxious myself and hope it goes well. She's got PE this week and will be going canoeing today!

So, now we're almost 3 weeks in and Dd1 seems to be adjusting pretty well. She's much less anxious now. She's making friends and is super excited about a school sponsored canoeing and camping trip this weekend. The teachers seem pretty good. She especially likes her science teacher.

On the downside there is not as much diversity at the school as there would be at our local middle school. There is some, but I wish there was more. On the plus side there is some diversity in the teaching staff with a Chinese teacher and an African teacher. There are only about 10-15 teachers total.
