Ear Infection treatment alternatives

Thread Starter

I was dx this AM with an acute/serious ear infection in one ear.  It is the result of a nasty cold that I've had for a week.  I have no temp.  Last night, I  had ear pain but that ended during night.  Now I just have annoying pressure.

The doc prescribed a high dose of amoxicillin (875mg BID).  And, I don't really want to take it...

I've heard vaguely thru the years that antibiotics don't really actually cure the ear infection.  Rather, the ear infection is usually gone by the time the antibiotics kick in.  I've also heard of using olive oil drops as an antibiotic alternative.  My boys thankfully have never been ear infection kids, so I just have no experience with this.

I am on cd7 today and prob will ovulate around cd14.  After a Dec m/c, I'm extremely cautious and looking for alternative ideas as well as thoughts re amoxicillin while ttc :)

Thanks so much :)

Well, if you're still breastfeeding any of your LO's you could express some and put it in the ear.  I've heard good things about garlic ear drops as well.   Coincidentally, I was also dx with a serious double ear infection + sinus infection exactly this time last year.  I was also prescribed a large dose of amoxicillin.  I took it b/c I had been so miserable for so long.  I didn't start feeling better for another week, I'd say.  And then the real kicker... I had a massive allergic reaction to the amoxicillin!  I violently vomited off and on for hours, couldn't really eat for days, had night sweats, and then broke out in a full body rash.  So itchy, so miserable... and it lasted for nearly 2 weeks!

I had never had a reaction to amoxicillin or any abx before so it surprised me, but the doctor I saw afterward said she sees this all the time.  People who have had the abx before are the ones more likely to react the next time they take them.  Anyway, not sure what I would do in your shoes right now, knowing how miserable it is to be sick, but at the very least, I would request a different abx and steer clear of the cillins!
