4 year old imitating others

Yeah, I know it's normal. But DS is imitating things like his friends' speech impediments. He's just saying things the way they say them b/c it's different and he thinks it's neat/cool/whatever. But I'm trying to explain to him that his friends might think he's making fun of them and get their feelings hurt. (And I definitely would feel awful if the moms overhead him.)

How do you explain this to a 4 year old in terms he can understand before it comes up at school?

ETA: He also imitates my dad's out-of-state accent, so it's definitely just experimenting and not malicious.
