Can you tell me about Mahopac/Brewster/Croton Falls/Carmel, NY?

Hi Mamas!!

I'm lurking on every thread I can to try to figure out where we want to live. We are exploring some options in the Carmel/Brewster/Mahopac area and I'd love your input!!

Anyone know these towns? What can you tell me about schools, culture, politics, amenities, etc.?

I live in Cold Spring, 20-30 minutes from those towns.  So I can't help too much.  But I know a few things.

Carmel is a neat little town center, surrounded by strip malls and ruralish areas.  Brewster is the same, but with a latin immigrant population as well (or at least that's how it was 10 years ago when I lived nearby for a while.)  I'm pretty sure there is an attachment parenting group in the Carmel area, though I didn't find them with a quick internet search.  If you pm me I may be able to connect you with a crunchy mama who lives in that area. 

Brewster has Green Chimneys Farm School, a neat place to visit with your kids.  They have preschool and day school too.  I also know a great beekeeper in Brewster.

I moved from the San Diego, CA area to Brewster in February. So, I really don't know much about the area and, sadly, can't be a help to you in that regard. So far, we like Brewster. People have been friendly.

I am looking for some "crunchy" (and not "crunchy"!) families in the area. I have also been seeking out a non-vac/alternate-vac pediatrician for my 4 year old daughter. Any help is appreciated! LMK if you end up in the area and we can plan a visit!

I live in Putnam Valley... so in the area. 

Mamamimim, Riverside Pediatrics in Croton has peds who support non-vaxing.  (Of the two head peds, one specializes in Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture; the other in homeopathy.)  I know that's a bit of a hike for you, but it's worth it for us.
