Vegetarian, and everything in my diet is what they say to avoid while BFing

My baby is only 16 days old. She started out very mellow, but over the past couple days she has been bursting out screaming while nursing and sleeping, flailing her legs and arms and stiffening her body. She will be perfectly peaceful and then just burst out of nowhere. She poops and pees fine and burps fairly often, so I didn't think it was tummy related, but now I'm wondering. I wanted to take some things out of my diet to see if that is the problem, but unfortunately EVERYTHING in my diet is what foods they say may cause problems for babies while BFing--nuts, soymilk, tofu, dairy (I eat a lot of yogurt), wheat, UGH!

Any vegetarian breastfeeding mamas have any advice? How long does it take to figure out what foods are bothering the baby?

I had to cut out dairy and soy, but wheat, nuts, chocolate etc were fine. It took some adjusting to get enough calories without the dairy, but it was doable. Once my little one was ~6 months old he did OK if I had a reasonable (not excessive) amount of dairy and was fine if I ate soy.

I think dairy is the most common thing that causes those problems so maybe you could start by just eliminating that?

Good luck!

I believe it takes about 2 weeks of getting a food out of the diet/breastmilk to figure out the cause. Just take things out one at a time,or else take everything out and bring them back one at a time, which ever you think best. Your baby could also just be a "high needs"baby, and this is just her personality. I've read about babies doing this in Sear and Sears Baby Book as well as other books by them. You can check out their website-http://www.askdrsears.com/. Look around on their site-I think it's under-http://www.askdrsears.com/topics/fussy-baby. They have a list of high need-type of babies. Hope this helps a little. Also, hope you don't have to cut things out of your diet. If it is an allergy-the biggest allergen for babies is dairy,so try cutting that out first. Good luck!
