Can you link the article?  Back when I taught high school genetics, the books I was using said that the main genes controlling eye color are the Bay and Gay genes.  Bay is dominant brown or recessive blue and gay is dominant yellow and recessive not yellow.  So the genotypes/phenotypes are as follows:

BBgg or Bbgg= brown

BBGG, BBGg, BbGg or BbGG=hazel

bbgg=blue

bbGg or bbGG=green

So if you have brown, your dh has blue and Owen came out with blue then we know:

You: Bbgg

Dh: bbgg

Owen: bbgg

Dylan: could be Bbgg or bbgg which would be brown or blue

However, like anything else biological, there is always a chance for random things happening...

DD has grey eyes with green rings around the pupil, I was hoping that meant they were turning green like my sister's - hers are the most beautiful shade of light jade green.

Oren's look like they have brown spots in the baby dark blue - I'm hoping his will be the beautiful brown/green hazel that his Dada has.

Hard to say... I'm not sure that anyone knows all the genes that control eye color.  It is known that beyond the two main genes there are pigment genes controlling how much of the gene is expressed.  And in the case of two different colors being expressed that would be an example of gene inactivation (the gene is expressed in some cells and not others).

I linked it.  I missed it and a second later edited to add it- you must have started writing before that!  You're quick! lol.gif

The geneticist in the article actually says that since DH has blue that he is bb bb.

"

BB bb Brown
BB Gb Brown
BB GG Brown
Bb bb Brown
Bb Gb Brown
Bb GG Brown
bb GG Green
bb Gb Green
bb bb Blue

OK, what does this mean for you? Well, your husband can only be bb bb as he has blue eyes. Since you have brown eyes, you could have any of six different possibilities. But since you have brown-eyed, green-eyed and blue-eyed children, the most likely possibility for you is Bb Gb. You have brown eyes but are a carrier* for both blue and green eyes."

I mis-stated the chances previously due to a hasty reading :-)  IF I am Bb Gb THEN the chances are as stated in my last post.  Not sure what I am though.  It's still fairly possible he could have green.  He's waking now so I'll get a photo :-)

I have true grey eyes. Is this variant of blue?

Christina- I actually found that wiki article pretty helpful and interesting in understanding eye color variations :-)  Wikipedia FTW haha!

Okay, they are using little b as the recessive allele of the Gay gene instead of little g like I was.  But what this phenotype chart does not account for is hazel.  I'm pretty sure that the BBGb, BBGG, and BbGg genotypes above would result in hazel.  If you have deep brown eyes, then I would say you do not have the dominant Gay gene.  Since you do have a blue eyed child we KNOW that you are Bb... the question is whether you are Gg or not.  Without some weird genetic stuff going on, I would bet you are not.  So again:

You: Bbgg

Dh: bbgg

Dylan: Bbgg (50% chance of brown) or bbgg (50% chance of blue)

These are the same genetics for me and dh.  My MIL has green eyes and kept saying that it was possible for our kids to get her eyes, but I really don't think it is.  MIL's mother had hazel eyes, which is where she got her dominant Gay gene from.  But she did not pass it on to dh as he has deep chocolate eyes.  So our kids each had a 50% chance of brown or blue.  Took us three kids to possibly get a blue eyed one, though!

Again... I'm not a geneticist and I recognize that odd things do happen!

Yes, this was my understanding.  Though according to that wiki article I just skimmed it appears there is a third known gene that could account for green and grey, but I believe these are still recessive to brown.

I'm so curious about KJ's eyes; they are super dark blue right now. I have green/brown hazel eyes and DH has the most piercing, amazing blue/green eyes, so I feel like KJ's eyes could turn out almost any color!  Right now they look like Elizabeth Taylor's "violet" eyes, though I doubt they'll stay that way.

Mine are a fairly medium brown- not super dark at all.  This "calculator" is pretty cool. http://museum.thetech.org/ugenetics/eyeCalc/eyecalculator.html It allows for your parents and siblings (if relevant) eye colors to be taken into consideration as well.  I have a blue eyed sib and dh has a green eyed sib.  My parents are green (mother) and brown (father) and DH's parents are blue (mother) and green (father).  It looks like the probabilites are 27.5% for blue, 22.5% for green, and 50% for brown.  Interesting!

D wasn't waking- he stirred and went back to sleep.  So a photo is coming later....

Katie, what color are your parents' eyes?

Cool site, J!  I just did mine and apparently dh and I have a higher chance of getting green than blue??  Mine says 29.1% chance of green.  It's also implying that the Gay gene can be carried and not expressed in the color "brown."  But that is not my understanding.  Dh has deep brown eyes... I don't think he carries the Gay gene.  But who knows at this point, I guess!  Watch, Avery's eyes will turn green on me and blow my mind!  lol.gif

The color of our kids' eyes is going to be so up in the air. We have every eye color under the sun in our family. Both mine and DH's moms have brown eyes and our dads have hazel eyes. My parents produced three daughters with all different eye colors: blue, brown, and green (me). Since my DH has hazel and I have green (kind of chameleon-like with how they change colors in different lighting), we're sure to get surprises with our kids. I *think* we're most likely to produce green or blue-eyed kids based on a genetics thing I looked at some time ago... Sora was born with dark greyish-blue eyes and they're lightening up a bit to a very pretty blue. I wonder if they'll stay. What's weird is that her eyes are so identical in shape and color to my sister's blue eyes that she looks like she could totally pass as her daughter! I really hope one of my kids gets my green eyes. smile.gif

This is Owen at 2.5 months (weird faces all around in this photo, lol!)  Bright blue!  D's are nowhere near this color.  SIgh.  I really hope he gets green, to be honest. I LOVE green eyes!  I'd like if he had brown, like me, too.  Especially since he already looks so much like me.  DH wants him to have blue eyes.  I just don't think they'll turn blue!  They seem to be dark blue (like newborn eyes) with brown and green flecks- I don't know how we could get blue out of that....

My mom has very light gray eyes, and my dad has brown eyes.  Sister has the same green/brown hazel as mine, and my brother has brown eyes.  Both of DH's parents and both his brothers have blue eyes.

J - love that pic!  What a gorgeous guy!

Okay, so previously I would have interpreted this as:

Mom: bbgg+ some other gene??

Dad: BBgg or Bbgg

You: Bbgg?? + some other gene??

Dh: bbgg

Since you ended up with the Bay (yellow) gene, this would be an example of not understanding fully where that green comes from.  So I guess your green was controlled by a different gene that one of your parents carries.  Perhaps the grey of mother has something to do with it.  Which I guess means that KJ could end up with:

KJ: Bbgg (brown), bbgg (blue), bbgg+some other gene (grey), Bbgg+some other gene? (your hazel/green)

This is all speculation of course!!!

According to all theories my children should all have brown eyes but the older 2 have green lol.gif'

Totally different subject, but I started the mini pill a few weeks ago.  When I get to my placebo pills I'm wondering if I will for sure have a period or not because of the breastfeeding.  Ive never had a period before 6 months PP but I know the pill can change that.  ANy one with experience to weigh in?

You and your dh both have brown?  But you could carry the blue... it's that pesky yellow that seems the wild card.

Different topic... Avery just peed in the potty!  Yay!  I made my first catch!  It was very exciting and I totally credit Dionna b/c I wouldn't have tried again today if it weren't for her blog post with pictures!  Thanks!!!

Yay, Avery!!! The first time Rhyko peed in the potty I thought it was the most amazing thing! Like, so primal... so instinctual! I was in awe of him lol.gif

Cool! Éowyn and I are getting back in the groove after last month and she's starting to fuss when she needs to go even if she's on her tummy.  My other two didn't care unless I was holding them.

I caught two more pees yesterday and one this morning.  I knew when he was about to poop twice yesterday, but didn't get my act together soon enough to get him on the potty.  I'm excited that it's working at all, though, so hopefully we'll get better at communication soon!   ecbaby2.gif

Yay Jamiee and Avery.

I have been making Shay more training pants because they're often in the laundry but last night I made a pair way too snug. He is a big boy. So there are some new undies for the new baby.
