Please don't gain 50lbs+ thread

I know there were a few of us not wanting to gain 50lbs + again this pregnancy.  At halfway through, how are you all doing?

Here's my previous stats

Pregnancy 1 - started out at 150ish and was just over 200 at birth

Pregnancy 2 - started out at 140ish and was just over 200 at birth

Pregnancy 3 - started out at 173lbs and ????

My goal is to end up "just over 200 at birth".  I am doing great so far, I'm 19 weeks and I'm up 7lbs.  If I gain a pound a week from here on out, I will be right over 200lbs at birth.  My fingers are crossed!!  Not that I will be devastated or anything if I am more than that.  It would just be really nice to not gain 50lbs total when I started out so much heavier to begin with.

And I feel so much better too.  Even though I started out heavier and I am heavier in general now, I just feel better about myself.  I don't know if it's because that scale isn't going up at such a high rate or what.  But it's encouraging!

i'm joining this thread! this is right up my alley. i gained over 50 lbs with my son and i DO NOT want to do that again. the first 30 lbs melted away but the last 20 hung on FOREVER! so far i'm doing okay i think and compared to my last pregnancy i'm doing much better. by 24 weeks i was up 27 lbs. right now at 20 weeks i'm up 10 lbs.

kudos to you nicole! it does feel better when the scale isn't going up as fast as it did the last time. and don't get me wrong -- i have nothing against gaining the weight, i just don't want it to be 50 lbs. it was too much! and i know how i got there too - i ate a lot! lol

I will joining this too :(

With #1 I started at 140 and got up to 192

#2 started at 157 and got up to 189

#3 I started at 135 and got up to 186

AND this time I think started at about 145  and at my last app (17 weeks and 20.5 now) I was 167 UGH!!!

This weight gain with pregnancy can be so frustrating.  Before babies I was always a comfortable, healthy weight.  With eating mostly healthy and moderate exercise when I remembered - it would go in spurts.  I know some of the weight gain comes with age...but I'm not that old, I don't think!  With my first I did gorge myself and I did not exercise.  I was a sloth.  I enjoyed gluttonizing.  The weight loss took a year, but it all came off.  With little to no diet changes and little to no exercise.  Then I promptly got pregnant.  I started exercising more and I made sure I wasn't overeating.  I was doing well for awhile, but then somewhere around month 5 or 6, I started gaining at a more rapid weight.  It was so frustrating!!!  After that baby, hardly any of the weight came off on it's own and I ate better and exercised to get down lower when she was 10 months old.  I then went back up to 173 before I got pregnant.  This time I decided I didn't want to try so hard, only to "fail".  If my body wants to hoard the fat for my baby and my breastmilk - so be it!  But, somehow I am not gaining as much.  I'm totally assuming it's because my fat stores are already pretty full, so my body knows it's okay not to hold onto everything.  I haven't been eating as much this time, but mostly because I haven't been as hungry.

Well, I'm glad you ladies are joining me and if we end up reaching that 50lb mark, we'll just have to commiserate.   And then make sure to stay talking after baby is here to get that weight back off!

I'm so in.

Baby #1 - started at 135, weighed 174 at delivery (39 pound gain)
Baby #2 - started at 121, weighed 142 at delivery (21 pound gain)
Baby #3 - started at 130, weighed 165 at delivery (35 pound gain)

This is baby #4. I started at 144, lost down to 137, now I'm 153, so 9 pounds from the start but really 16 pounds of gain already greensad.gif I would love to stay under 165, but DEFINITELY under 170. I do not want to be more than 40 pounds above my goal weight (130) when I deliver. Is this even possible? To only gain 17 more pounds with 19 weeks left of pregnancy?

BTW, I know this is about not gaining more than 50, but I am a teeny person (5'1 1/2" ish and small framed) and started out overweight, so I think this applies to me!

Hopefully 200 is just your magic number lol

With my first, I was 45+ at my 34 week appointment, delivered at 36 weeks, so I was probably up a couple more pounds... =/

With my second, I gained 35, I think.

This time, I'm worried.  I'm up 15ish pounds (the last time I checked) and we realized to find that I should be up 10-15lbs, but I've recently started to REALLY try to not indulge.  Problem is, I get REALLY cranky and upset when I don't eat anything that I really want.  I have massive cravings like I did with my first.  Must be another boy (my second child was a girl and I barely had any cravings with her).

becoming - good luck!  I don't know if it's possible for everyone, but there are some ladies who can do it.  Hopefully you will be one of them this time. :)

kjm - I don't feel like I have that many cravings during my pregnancies.  But I do notice that I will really want something every now and then and it's better to just indulged than to spend hours and days dreaming about it.  I used to think cravings during pregnancy were the same thing over and over again, but mine are usually random.  There are a few items I've wanted throughout all my pregnancies, but it's like once every month or longer, so I don't consider it a crazy craving.  They are definitely not healthy, most recently it was cheesecake and fettucine alfredo.  I made homemade versions of each....so not as bad as it could have been.

DS1 200 before 290 at birth (90 lbs)

ds1 140 before 225 at birth (70 lbs)

dd 150 before 290 at birth (130 lbs)

this one 150 before and so far about 30 lbs

,  i was a size 10 before i got PG and now i wear a large in maternity pants.  i was eating gluten free and vegetarian but still gaining weight like crazy so now ive cut out starch too.  i feel a lot better and my arms look slimmer so that's good. i  dont want to have to take 8 months to lose all the baby weight again

I always feel bad about joining these kinds of things because I'm a skinny girl.  I've always been a skinny girl and I've had problems keeping myself from being underweight.  Of course, I'm also a dancer and have a very small bone structure, so I can't help but think in most cases, that's not a bad thing.  However, this pregnancy has me thinking it's going to be just like my first.  I'm already in the category of "excessive weight gain" even with being underweight before I got pregnant...

So, here's where I was at:

#1 Conceived at 105lbs to 156lbs at delivery (51lbs)

#2 Conceived at 122lbs to 145lbs at delivery (23lbs)

#3 Conceived at 115lbs to 138lbs at delivery (23lbs)

#4 Conceived at 109lbs to 136 at week 22 (27lbs)

As things stand, I've already gained more weight than I did with both my boys.  I'm kind of dreading the possibility that I'm going to end up gaining more than I did with my daughter!  It's not so much that I'm worried about taking the weight off afterwards.  Either it'll come off or it won't, and a bit more weight will only give me more fuel to breastfeed with.  I'm more worried about staying healthy.  What concerns me most is I've been eating a lot less (at least consistently) than I did before I was pregnant.  Sure, some days I eat more than I did before I was pregnant, but those days are rare, and I've gotten off of soda, coffee, and sweets for the most part.  It's my normal amount of starches mixed with more healthy foods like fruit replacing the junk that was in my diet before (and admittedly I ate more junk than I should).  Maybe it's just that I'm turning 31 next month and they say your metabolism changes after you hit 30?

Anyhow, I'd really like it if I didn't gain 50+lbs this pregnancy for health reasons, you know?

i guess i should post my stats as well (i left that part out):

#1 started out at 151ish (a bit heavy for me) and gave birth at 200ish

#2 started out at 143 (a good weight for me) and @ 21 weeks 153. I'm hoping this time to keep it at no more than 173/175ish. Here's to hoping we all stay under a 50lb weight gain!

Is this kind of like throwing pennies in a well and making a wish?  If so, I'm totally in...I'm such a gainer.

With DS I was ~135 to start and gained almost exactly 50lbs-- so ~185 when he was born.  This time I started around 145 by my scale and looks like I've gained 15 lbs so far at 21 weeks.  The crazy thing is, on another scale I weighed in at 168!  That would be 23 lbs already :(

Even weirder is that I'm really active-- I work out 3-4 times a week and just did 15 miles on the bike today.  For me it's not an appearance thing, I never have felt so beautiful as when I was 40 weeks with DS and huge-- you know?  I was just like... YES, this is what my body was made for!  But I hate feeling so heavy.  Like I need a crane to turn over in bed... and having to pause going up one flight of stairs....argh.

So my wish is cast.  Under 50.  Under 50. Under 50.  :)

Haha, mudhugger, I suppose it is kind of like wishing into a well!!

I think some bodies just really want to cling onto that weight - for baby or breastmilk - or something.  I have a really, really hard time losing weight while I'm breastfeeding too.  I started exercising, only moderately and still eating normally while at 190lbs and my daughter was 10 months old and I noticed a drop in my supply.  My mom gained 50lbs with me, and she started out under 100lbs.  So I like to blame it on heredity. ;)

I had an appointment at the pregnancy center today.  I've gained 10 lbs in the last month.  I was shocked at first but then remembered that I ate a pint of Ben and Jerrys and an entire jar of peanut butter in two days.  The Dr said to watch out for carbs.  I don't eat many, usually, but have had a huge craving for gluten free bread which is basically white bread and sugar.  Totally crappy stuff.  Going to make some brown rice salads to help with the carbs.  I'm now motivated to exercise a lot more.  -thecountrymouse

I totally get you on this.  I'm a professional belly dancer and belly dance instructor.  With all exercise I get, I can't imagine how I've gained this much weight.  I'm thinking I'm going to have to add some yoga or something into the mix, and probably go back to daily dancing instead of three days a week like I did with my last pregnancy.

For being pretty fit, it feels horrible to need help getting off the couch half the time, and getting up off the floor.  I feel like I've gained a million pounds.  I was never quite this bad with my last two pregnancies!  I love the mama belly, but I feel like I weigh a ton more!

Starting weight: 125

Current weight at 23 weeks: 140

This is my first pregnancy but I have been feeling a little concerned about my weight gain thus far.  I'm 5'1" and started out a little over my ideal weight due to nursing school and a knee injury.  I've only weighed myself twice during the pregnancy and it was a little shocking to see 140 on the scale over the weekend.

i would like to wish for not gaining 50 lbs! lol.

with my first (16 years ago) i started at 115 and gained 65 lbs.

with my 2nd (4 years old) i started at 160 and gained 40 lbs.

with my third i started at 173 was on the gd diet, hit 199 and then was back at 173 in a months.

then i lost 40 lbs during her second year. i was down to 133. back up to 143 right  before conception. and  now up to 155 or so. i dont want to deprive baby of anything but i also dont want to gain a bunch of weight back. sigh. i eat all the time though. i mostly crave meat and bread. or shrimp and rice. but lately  i want root beer and dr pepper. i have been getting low blood sugar. which is new. with the girls it was high blood sugar. so if i dont eat i get weak. so i keep eating. i am trying to balance it out with lots of housework, walking, and yoga class, lol.

i'm freaking out. i got on the scale this morning and i'm up 14 lbs!! WHich means i put on 4 lbs in a week! bigeyes.gif yikes2.gif i remember with my DS i exploded around this time too. i really don't want to get to 50 lbs! ack! i just really need to vent. i haven't been eating horrible, but not exactly great either. most days i eat like i normally did prepregnancy. but on the weekends my husband likes to eat out (i do too) - so that probably doesn't help. at this rate i'll be 50 lbs in no time! oh noooooooo.... i hate this feeling.

I don't think 14lbs at this point is unreasonable...  Maybe you saved all your weight gain for that week and now you will be slow the next few weeks!  And I hear you on the eating out.  DH and I both encourage each other.  For awhile I was doing really well at planning meals and I kept rejecting his suggestions.  But I've been slacking and now we're both slipping back into "let's eat out frequently" mode.

Thanks for hearing me Nicole. I just had a knee jerk reaction to the scale yesterday and needed somewhere safe to vent. It probably didn't help that my MIL was in town and not once did she say I look nice/good and then volunteered in each of her pregnancies she gained 23 lbs and 27 lbs respectively. There was some other stuff too - but I'm probably being a bit sensitive about it too since I feel so insecure on the issue.
