when to throw in the towel (on the nap for the day)

So, I have a kiddo who normally naps at about 1pm (half hour on either side) until 3:30pm (half hour on either side).  Today he was tired and we put him down in his crib at 12:45pm.  He talked to himself (happily) for an hour at which point I double checked for a poop, re-nursed and put him back in the crib.  He has now been in there chatting to himself for another 45 minutes (he's not unhappy, just not sleeping).

Do I throw in the towel and just go get him...or leave him until he calls for me?  He did this last night with bedtime (7:15pm) and didn't go to sleep until 8:45pm (I went in twice to check on him and re-nursed once).

ETA, he normally falls asleep within minutes of lying in his crib.  Oh, and he's 21 months old.

So, he finally stopped talking, 2:45 and I think he's asleep now...but seriously, 2 hours to wind down?  What's up with that?

Sounds like he wasn't ready for a nap.  Some days just go like that.  If he's not screaming, I'm perfectly happy letting them lie there entertaining themselves.  YMMV
