tips on freezing onions?

I realized that since we always buy our onions in bulk, we usually have to toss out at least two or three when they go bad because we didn't use them in time.  I have this great little onion-cutting tool, and was thinking about just chopping up all the onions and freezing them.  Has anybody else ever done this?  I know I don't want chopped up onions in my fridge because they tend to smell even when they are in a ziplock bag.  I would appreciate any tips.  I'm trying to get my family to where we don't throw out any food out anymore at all.

You could probably chop them and store themin a glass jar in the freezer, I do that in my fridge and they don't smell.  I don't know how you'd get them out without thawing the whole jar though.... Maybe baby food jars full of just enough onion for one recipe....

we've frozen our onions for 3 years now.  i put them in ziploc bags with 1/4-1/2 a cup in them & then put all of those bags into a larger freezer bag.  It cuts down most of the smell.  We don't mind the small amount of smell that it gives off & it doesn't get into our food.  We keep them in the chest freezer.

I buy frozen chopped onions all the time.  I think if you chopped them and spread on a cookie sheet until frozen then put in a ziplock bag you would have less of a problem with clumping.

I just chop and put in a freezer quart baggie.  I do try to flatten out the bag at first.  I usually only need 1/2c at a time and just bang the bag on the counter if it gets clumpy once frozen
