Dingoes Defy the February Slump: Keep Running, Mamas - Page 20

JG - lol.gif I know, it's awful

Help Dingos!  I've been trying to make a playlist on iTunes for Boxing.  I've got one essentially made, but now I can't figure out how to make my stupid Shuffle play it!  Every time I think I have it loaded up and hit play, it starts on some random song.  And I don't have the little knob on 'shuffle' either.  I'm hating Apple again tonight!

Also, do any of you have the game, Dr. Suess' Super Stretchy ABCs?  I picked it up at GW (of course) and it seems like a lot of fun but it didn't come with instructions so we don't know what to do with the cards, the boxes or the little footprint coins.

Popping back in because I remembered I wanted to respond to BBM about piano. Your solution sounds great. I was practicing 30 minutes/day at that age, but if she's happiest with 20, it sounds like it's mostly working for her. Either way, she can move forward more quickly and spend more time if she wants, or slow it down. Also, she might want to bring a little notebook, maybe of a 5x7ish size and ask her teacher to write down what she should be working on in each piece. My notebook was always with my music so I knew which pieces to work on and if there was something specific I needed to pay attention to, like fingerings in a passage or whatever.

joy.gif It's been a long funk, and this could be a fluke, but I feel like I might just be back. 14km just completed, which totally qualifies as a long run for me these days. Even my tummy and guts have the eeww, long-run feeling. Just brewed a cup of coffee and am now heading across to the beach for a little relaxation before the kids get home from the movie at the mall.

I think I am just going to take this mileage thing where I can. On my third loop of the park I finally got that feeling of a good physical wringing. I was all high and smiles and even got some smiles of recognition from fellow runners. My pace was slow, but faster than it has been. Need more running.

Real she has a book her teacher uses, but the teacher said she could record the lesson if that would help with hearing the pieces. I guess I have a hard time with it because this is like so many things where she has real talent, but little motivation. I keep telling myself she'll find her passion. There are those times though where I wish there was just a tad more effort.

Jo that is awesome! I love that you are finding that place.

Early very groggy morning. Hate when I wake up that way.

Yay, Jo!

I don't think I"m getting my run this morning. It's raining and I have a head cold so I may wait til later and try and either get to the gym or do a tae bo dvd. I need it - feeling sluggish and bloated, and I think I gained a couple pounds during my visit here. (my SIL keeps a secret stash of caramel covered popcorn...oops).

Late night anxiety attack and stuffy nose so I'm also very groggy this a.m...ugh.

Good Morning! DH and I finally got smart and sent the cats into the garage at night so I actually slept until 6:30! Super busy day today ( teaching art, library, post office, etc.) but I still hope to get to the Y for a walk/run after all that.

Jo - soooooo glad you've finally gotten DH on board regarding education joy.gif! And your running mileage (km-age?!) is impressive!

Must wake the troops.

joy.gif Jo!

Jo - joy.gif

Plady - what's on your playlist? Sorry I cant help w/ the ipod, I'm pretty useless with all that (I'm still living in the 70's, yo)

Mel38 - I was thinking about you during my run/walk, b/c I think I might actually prefer the intervals - I like running hard on the run part, knowing I have a walk "break" after, and so on. I think we could be good partners. Alas, you are there, and I am here lol.gif

RR: 53 minute bike intervals, 20 minute run/walk intervals. WOW that was hard. Mind over some seriously sluggish, lactic-acid loaded matter today. But done.

Curious; for those who drink their coffee after the run (Jo, Nic) is this b/c of GI issues?...'cause caffeine before a work-out is pretty, er, awesome jammin.gif

Ok, for someone who is signed up for a freaking half ironman, I am doing remarkably little exercise these days!!!

I worked at 6-9am today.  Woke up to a power outage at 5am, had to scavenge around for childcare because school got cancelled (same power outage), worked, and am now madly cleaning the house in anticipation of 13 kindergarteners and their parents descending at 4:30 for our first Daisy Scout meeting!  These are mostly girls I don't know, so I want my house to not look too horrific.

I will run again, I will run again, I will run again!

Jo - Awesome work on your running lately!!!!

JayGee and sparkle, cute finds for both of you!

bec, good luck with the daisy scouts. Between 13 kindergarten families and a half-ironman, you have me convinced that you are a brave, tough woman. bow.gif

Nic, I hope you're feeling better soon.

Plady, good luck with the playlist. I don't know about shuffles- I've been mystified before by the lack of control with them.

Jo joy.gif

NRR- I lucked into an overtime night shift last night (yes- double time for the entire 12 hours!) because I had worked 8-12 in a mandatory musculoskeletal injury prevention workshop, then was called back in for 1930-0730 nights. It was steady but not insane, and I got a good recovery nap this morning during preschool. This makes up for a lot of being to sick to take any shifts two weeks ago, and not having any calls at all the following week. Now for an afternoon meeting with the dean at the college. The benefit of being busy last night was no time to worry about what being called in for a late meeting on Friday afternoon means...

RR- Bootcamp tonight- though the nurse who called in sick is on again tonight, so I might go back for another night shift if I'm called.

So I got this genius (...or crazy) idea to have dd1's violin teacher incorporate some pop songs into her repertoire - I think this will help motivate her, and as Dh is learning guitar, they could play together. One of these days I will start my violin lessons, I swear.

I cant find any Dixie Chicks fiddle sheet music, which she would be excited for, but I did find the violin opening to the new Coldplay song Paradise (as well as a cover where violin stands in for vocals). Paradise is also one of the new songs on my playlist, Plady. Here's the advanced violin version we will NOT be using lol.gif

Ok, now to resume my life. I do really have one you know orngtongue.gif

I think there is a very fine line between brave and mentally unbalanced!  Now it's 14 girls!bigeyes.gif  Oh, and I was called in to work from 6:30 to close.  They are desperate and don't have anyone else.  So, the Daisies leave at 6, my two oldest get picked up from dance at 6:15, and I have to somehow be at work at 6:30!

Kids are healthy, it is snowing (yay!), I have so much to be grateful for, but my heart and thoughts are really heavy. I am so tired.

Shanti - Maybe you could find a reason to go on a long car trip wherein your car 'breaks down' and leaves you 'stranded' so you 'have to' spend the night in a nice hotel?  I hate that you're in such a bad place even though I'm sure it will pass eventually.

Re: boxing - There is this tiny little gym in the back of an auto body shop (for real) where there is just enough space for some bags to hang and people to get around.

Re:playlist - I still don't know how to get to my playlist on the effing shuffle and I'm extra pissed because when I tried to put the playlist from the shuffle to the iPhone it wouldn't let me.  Internet digging says I'm not allowed to.  Fuck you, Apple! is what I say to their faux-user-friendly-intuitive interface bullshit.  I paid good money for both devices and my music and if I want to hook up my phone to both my computer and dh's I should not find that I don't have permission.

Just back from the gym post chiro in which he did something that helped my neck tweak but which seems to have interfered with my ability to lift weights with one arm.angry.gif  And now I'm waiting for my students to arrive for rehearsal.  They'd just better be ready to focus or they're going to meet my evil twin.

Yes, Bec bow.gif and wild.gif!! I hope you survive all of that. And did you say Half-Ironman somewhere? I mean, I sit out a few days and what happens? When is it, anyway?

Sparkle, yay intervals! I am so glad to hear that those are working for you. I'm loving 'em! Seriously, the other day I did a 5 mile 200m fast/200m recovery run, and that was all on the track. I ran faster than ever in my life, sub 7 min (ok, it was only for 200m, but I'm counting it!).

Shanti hug2.gif I'm hoping that you get your rest and recovery time this weekend and hopefully you will feel better soon.

Nick, don't worry - at the rate you are running, you'll have that caramel popcorn burned off in no time.

I am keeping up with the discussion on music and lessons - good ideas!

Plady, I'm not sure with the shuffle. Can you try plugging in your shuffle to the computer with itunes and syncing only that playlist? Seems extreme, but if that's what you are primarily using it for, I would consider that rather than listening to random stuff during a workout. We are always loading stories from Story Nory on our ipods, and nothing crashes a good cruising run than having the next song be something like chapter 5 of Alice in Wonderland. eyesroll.gif

So, ski weekend was a complete success (well, from my perspective). DH was probably disappointed because, well, because it was North Carolina and not Montana, but hey. DS learned to ski well enough to get down pretty much everywhere, and DD is also doing great. For me, that's a success to get them all out there and up to at least intermediate beginner level, you know?

Also, I managed to finish my huge job for the new client, and they called yesterday to tell me that they were really happy and everything was "perfect" thumb.gif. They are so nice to work with anyway, so I hope to get more work from them in the future.

This week was busy with smaller jobs, school stuff and the like, and I just spent about 2 hours cleaning the kitchen and reorganizing the kids' bookshelf, so I feel great getting the weekend started with some de-cluttering.

No FM in the last 2 days, and I am feeling like a total slug.

Cross-posted with you Plady, but I just wanted to concur... That is total BS!! What about - what is that called - "home share" or some such? But you shouldn't even need that because you are one and the same user, just with two different devices. You should be able to load your playlist onto any device you want (in theory). I think the shuffle is a p.o.s.  I had a nano. Long after my battery died I replaced it. But I never recycled the old one. Got a recall notice and they no longer make a tiny nano. So I got a shuffle and dang it I just cannot use it. So I sold it on craigslist and pocketed my $$.  One thing to consider: do they still have the deal where you can only use your itunes downloads on three? five? computers/devices?  Maybe that's the issue?  I suspect there's one tiny glitch that you didn't click.

Here's my technology vent for the day. Yesterday on npr I hear a story about privacy and the itnernet and cookies. So I go into firefox's preferences and tell it I don't want it to automatically accept cookies. Then try to log into facebook. it needs cookies (of course, how's it going to make moola otherwise). Anyhow, try to switch cookies back on and click the box, close the window and try to log in (repeatedly) and firefox will not accept the changes. Then after securing my cookies (still not fixed), I find out that my yahoo mail account has been hacked. grrr.  and to top it off: my hard drive is 98% full. Which means it won't do what I want it to do.

Coldplay's Viva la Vida is cool too. The advanced orchestra at R's school performed it last year: http://bit.ly/wigQGI (There are some better clips on YouTube but I didn't like any of them enough.)

Have I mentioned that I love our music program? In good news, the district decided to postpone major cuts that would affect the classroom until next year. That means our instrumental music program for 5-6th graders will remain, our teacher librarians will continue to have jobs, as will the instructional coaches and guidance counselors and teachers. Unfortunately, it means unavoidable cuts next year--up to 600 jobs! Looks like we'll be putting a mill levy on the November ballot. I'm hoping it will just be for the county, because anything state-wide is likely to go the way that last year's did: a big fat no.
