My sister, who is having a baby, lives 3 hours away. She will be visiting for a weekend, and I was thinking of having a "mini baby shower" (I guess really just a little get together!) here for her, made up of family who lives near by. This would just be 5 guests, and my sister and me. I have a close friend here and am wondering if it would be a huge no-no to invite her? My sister has never met her. I would love them to meet, and as my friend is also a mother I thought she would be a nice addition. (and i would let her know this is why I was inviting her) The other reason is that of the guests 3 are of our parent's generation, so it would be nice to add another younger person. What do you think? I'm not a slave to etiquette or anything, just would love to hear if people think this is fine. Thanks.

Hmm well IMO it woud be awkward to invite someone who hasn't met her yet to her baby shower, as a baby shower is more about friends/family of the mother-to-be. I would invite them both too lunch at a different time personally.
Thanks, you are probably right and I was sort of thinking that. I was just hoping to add to the guest list to make it a bit more festive.

As long as she is the socially outgoing/comfortable type I would probably invite her. It is a small get together, and it might be nice to have another young person. Let her know there she doesn't need to bring a gift. Let your sister and her both know you thought they would hit it off. My sisters and I would totally do something like this. We live far apart and if we didn't invite a friend to a family event or two we might never get to meet the people in each others lives.
