No Poo - Page 4

I would do a coconut oil conditioning on the ends at least, then try again?  That coconut milk shampoo might be just right for you since it would have the cleaning power of Dr. B's as well as the fats in the coconut milk to moisturize.  I just ran out of my BS and ACV so maybe I'll try that shampoo and see how it works....

I did 2 weeks of either just water, or my lemon-juice rinse, and I had yucky yucky hair. Dull and lifeless and greasy and smelly. Not just greasy, but, like, coated. I can't use BS, too drying. But I wasn't brushing it every day. Then I got my hair cut and she washed it with conventional shampoo and it was so soft and pretty, so now I don't know what to think. I'm back to using my natural shampoo twice a week.

I'm on day 7 of no poo and I have been using the baking soda and ACV every other day.  My hair is chin length and very fine and thin.  I usually have to wash it everyday to avoid looking like a total grease ball.  So far, my hair actually looks better than it did a week ago.   It doesn't smell bad at all and it only gets static after I brush it.  I'm going to stick it out for another week and see what happens but so far so good!thumb.gif

I think just a little coconut oil rubbed on your palms and then on the ends of the hair would be enough for those of you experiencing static.  I'm sure it's just the winter air, especially since I notice you're all in Eastern US which is very dry this time of year.  Neither the BS or ACV have conditioning properties - that is, the ACV isn't moisturizing so the moisture needs to come from something else.

Yeah, I'm going to do a coconut oil conditioning tomorrow and then see how things proceed.  I'd really like it if I didn't have to do anything with my hair, but I'm not sure if that's possible now that I see how it's reacting.

Actually, doing nothing might be just the thing for you, Jaimee!  The BS and ACV might just be too drying.  Your natural oils might be enough to keep it healthy.  The problem with the conventional shampoos is they dry out the scalp, so then we have to condition so that we don't trigger the oil glands to produce oils.  For some reason we think the natural oils are *bad* but if we just give them time to adjust, I think that is the way to go.   Are you brave enough to go cold turkey?  The only issue I'd foresee is that your hair is so long you'd have to really brush brush brush it so that you distribute the oils to the ends of your hair.  Obviously boar bristle brushes are ideal, but if that bothers you (as a vegetarian) then perhaps you can find another similar type of brush?

I was going to say the same thing as J.

When I was doing hard core no poo, my hair was almost to my hips and as i mentioned before, I hardly did anything to it. I'd just use water and do the 'shampooing' action to massage my scalp when I was in the shower. And then I'd just do a very diluted BS rinse every so often (more when I felt my hair was actually dirty - like after lake swimming or getting super sweaty or something) and then ACV after that. It really wasn't very often, though.

I put coconut oil in my hair after my shower this morning and left it in for a while.  I just rinsed it out and we'll see how that helped (or not).  I do have a boar bristle brush and I've been brushing several times a day, but it just creates massive amounts of static.  FX the coconut oil helped with that without turning me into a grease ball.  I'm fine trying nothing, but my hair gets really tangled- the ACV seemed to help with that.  Maybe eventually it wouldn't get so tangled?

surrender.gif  My hair is now both greasy and staticy!!  How you may ask?  Parts of it are flying away and the rest of it is hanging down in greasy strings.  It feels soft, but looks disgusting.  I think I will have to admit defeat and wash my hair to get back to my "normal" and perhaps try again in the summer when it's humid.  I'm tired of dull, unmanageable hair.

Butting in where I don't belong to say come join the dark side... use the shampoo... he he he <evil laugh>. I un-no-poo. (Sounds better than saying "I poo.")

Off to enjoy lathering up my hair in the shower.  2whistle.gif

Carry on, baking soda warriors.

Day 11 no poo for me and I have to say my hair looks great!  Is it possible to skip the dreaded transtition period?  I maybe had a couple bad hair days but it seems to have regulated.  Is it still no poo when you "wash" with the baking soda every other day?

Jill- I have to "wash" every other day too.  It's still no poo because... there's no shampoo! :-)

I caved.  I washed with shampoo and conditioner.  My hair looks and feels much, much better. But it's considerably darker than it was...?  Maybe it took the henna out?  I dunno.  I'm bummed it didn't work out as I had hoped.  But I think I'll try washing less often and using ACV in between.

I'm on day one of no poo.  I'm glad I started it without reading this thread first!  I started this once in the last few hazy months, but stopped when we found we had a lice infestation.  (Gah-rosss!!!!)  I skipped the chems and just used olive oil to delouse, but that left my head utterly disgustingly dripping with oil, so I used regular shampoo and conditioner til the lice was gone.   (And it seemed fairly easy to get rid of even without the chems!)  Anyway, seeing this thread was enough to get me to try it again.

My DH, who apparently does like the smell of vinegar, told me I smell like vinegar.  I don't know how he could tell, since we have acv set out to catch the gnat invasion.

I normally, at least in a cold winter, have very oily and staticy hair, while washing every 2-3 days.  I haven't had any issues of that sort with regular washing this winter, because it was hardly winter.

My hair is pretty dull and lifeless anyway, so, I don't have much at stake.  On the other hand, I have yet to eperience the dreaded ppd hair loss.  Y'all are scaring the crap out of me.

I'm starting with you, Carey!

I got my hair chopped off yesterday so I think it's as good a time as any to start no poo again! I think for me, I'm just going to do water only for a little bit until the oils even out. My hair is short enough, now, that I don't even need to ACV to detangle. We'll see how it goes! My hair has been SOOOO dry and my scalp SOOO flakey and even kind of 'scabby' grossness. I hope water only will help that.

I've been doing "part time no poo" for the last week.  I washed to get rid of the coconut oil grease and conditioned to get rid of the static.  Then I used just a touch of shampoo the next time and ACV to detangle.  The next time I used just water and a touch of conditioner on just the ends of my hair.  Next time I think I'll do just water and ACV and see how I can proceed from there.  Some static is returning.

I caved too and washed my hair. I have to say, it felt great!   My hair definately looks more shiny and healthy after not washing it for 3 weeks though!

Well I've kept the static at bay, but that may have more to do with the change in temp around here.  I have not used shampoo (just conditioner or ACV) in about 4 days and it's not looking good again!  Ugh... I may have to give up on this experiment and maybe just use less shampoo.
