I went into my midwife's office Nov 2nd, being 8 days overdue. I had been having some very random contractions, but nothing consistent or painful. She examined me and I was a little over 4cm dilated. She sweeped my membranes and stretched me to 5-6cm dilated. On the way home I was having some pretty good contractions. I sent a text to my midwife and she said to try and get some rest and see what happens in the morning. Rob (dp) went to his house for the night to take care of some things. I went to bed, and surprisingly was able to sleep until about 4:30am.
When I woke up I wasn't having any contractions and was sort of bummed about it. Rob called to see if he should go to work or come over. I told him he could go to work, I wasn't feeling anything. Around 5:30am contractions started. I called Rob back and told him to come over. Contractions were really picking up and starting to get painful. I called my midwife and she said to wait another hour or two and call her back. I called my doula, and we decided that we would probably just meet her at the hospital, because since I was so dilated the night before I knew I would be heading to hospital sometime that morning. Rob got to my apartment around 7:30am. I showered, than called my midwife back and said that I think I should come in.
We left (the car ride there was NOT fun. Contractions are not so great when you are stuck in a car) and arrived at the hospital around 9:30am. I went up to labor and delivery and got right into a room. Around 10am my water started leaking a little. My doula arrived right around this time. They had to get a good reading of the babies heartbeat and contractions before I could go into the birthing tub, so I was stuck in bed waiting for a good reading. What I thought was going to be a quick thing turned into me being stuck to the monitors all day long. They couldn't get a good steady reading. His heartbeat kept going down. I was in a "zone" though and would just close my eyes and moan through each contraction. I would occasionally get up to go to the bathroom, but I kind of hated to do that because I always got really strong/painful contractions when I was on the toilet. Around 6pm I was checked and was only 7cm. I was totally discouraged by this. I was exhausted. We still couldn't get a great reading on heartbeat and contractions, so we decided to do an internal monitor. It showed things much more clearly. His heartbeat started to really get low during contractions, so they were flipping me all over the place to stabilize him. Let me tell you, in the middle of a really painful contraction, to hear "you need to get on your other side right now!" is terrible and so hard to do. When I was on my hands and knees I had this huge urge to push when I had a contraction. I told the nurse, and she told me not to, I wasn't dilated yet. I told her I couldn't help it, it was happening. She ran and got my midwife, who came and said I was fully dilated!
I started pushing at 8pm. I pushed on my hands and knees for a little while, then went to my back (that was most comfortable for me.) Pushing is like nothing I've ever experienced before! CRAZY amount of pressure down there. By this time I was so tired and kept saying I couldn't push and didn't want to push anymore. I was just done. I pushed a few times and my midwife said she could see him! I didn't belive her, because I expected to be pushing for hours like a lot of first time moms. But, she was telling the truth! Landon James was born at 8:42pm. He had his cord around his neck and around each of his legs......that what was causing his heartbeat to keep dipping so low.
I cannot explain how happy I was when I saw him. (also, the feeling after the baby comes out is just a pure high) I just looked at him and couldn't believe this was happening. Here was MY baby boy, who I've been waiting for for so long. I still look at him and can't believe he is mine.
