alternative, natural baby registry websites

Hello all you beautiful ladies! I'm thinking about baby registries for this, our first baby, and would prefer to find websites for natural, earth-friendly baby stuff as an alternative to registering at babies'r'us. We'll be doing the registry through MyRegistry.com, which allows us to add anything from any website, anywhere.

So far I've come up with Palumba, Nova Naturals, and a few wondeful etsy shops like WoolyBaby, and WrenWillow. What I would love to hear about are any great etsy shops you know of, or any other good websites for books, clothes, cloth diapers, slings, handmade or wooden toys, and things like that you know and love and buy from.

Any suggestions?

:)

Do you have any local shops?  We have a couple different natural toy & baby care shops around town that you can register at if you go into the store.  I think they put the registry up online after that, but I'm not 100% sure.  But I think that would be a great place to start.

The only time I really buy online is from amazon or barnes & noble, so I cannot help you out about online registries.

I have some links on my site that you're welcome to check out--they're on this page: http://www.mudhugger.com/mudhug/parenting/index.php  and there's always etsy :)  We did the same thing with our registry for our first and it was awesome.  Good luck and have fun!!!

Try GracefullyGreenBaby.com. It's got organic clothing, carriers, cloth diapers, and a great variety of bath care products. In full disclosure, I'm the owner, so I'm a bit bias. :) But on the upside, I can give you a discount! Use the promo code "hello" and get 10% off anything! Also, feel free to reach out if you have any questions. (emily@gracefullygreene.com) There are a ton of great sites out there. Have fun on your search!

I know if I were registering anywhere at all...I would ask for everyone to spend their money on our account at the local crunchy consignment store for mothers and children. It's so super poshy boutiquey and awesome and has EVERYTHING you could imagine needing from cloth diapers to gear and clothing for women and babies from newborn through teen years. There is a used side (that hardly even looks like second hand stuff, because they only accept things in pristine condition and won't take anything with disney characters or tacky things on them) and a new side that is ALL fair trade, organic, etc etc....it's AWESOME. One stop shopping that is so incredibly cheap, you can't even handle it...and it's all name brands and super good, high quality stuff.

Do you have anything like that in your area? If you don't know about it, can you research and try and find something? It is worth finding out! Buying brand new stuff is SO expensive and they grow out of it in NO TIME. Like, within a week of being able to fit in it. I can't tell you how many times I've picked something up and been like "ohhhh, this is so cute, shame they didn't even get to wear it!".

My kids wear adorable clothing, high quality, lots of organic brands, european brands, expensive US name brands and REALLY adorable styles...and for what it costs to buy a few outfits NEW, I can outfit them for an entire season. Really, like, I can walk into this place and drop $100-120 and buy everything they need from shoes to hats, coats and everything in between for an entire 4-5 month period...and people think I shop super high end places to find their clothing.

It's worth looking for this type of place...it makes it much more fun and cost efficient to shop for your kids and also gives you a place to bring the clothes back to consign when they grow out of them. Its also a cool "community hub" for other "crunchy types" and we always have so much fun when we go. I meet girlfriends and we shop while taking turns watching the kids as they play with the other children in the fun little house in the middle of the store. They have AWESOME books, slings, glamour mom stuff, just EVERYTHING. I would highly recommend you find a place near you like this. Consignment shops like the one we go to are popping up everywhere these days because people are catching on to how awesome it is to shop for less, get good quality stuff and buy what's already out there instead of putting money in the pockets of slave labor supported companies to buy up brand new stuff. Not to mention being able to consign things once your kids grow out of them...which keeps a pretty nice flow of money coming back into your account at the consignment shop. It's a good way to go about it!

BWG, that place sounds amazing! I can pretty much assure you, though, that you must live in a special area...

Hahaha I love where I live, for sure....but I think there are more places like this you'd think! I definitely live in a state with "hot spots" of crunchy communities...but I also live in a very wealthy state where people buy new a lot and there are malls ABSOLUTELY EVERYWHERE!

I drive well over an hour to get to this place, but I swear, I'd drive three times that distance. I really recommend that everyone do a bunch of research and see if there is something like this in their area! Go to the tribes forum and ask around, etc. I didn't know this place existed until I was getting ready for my first baby and thinking "there's gotta be a consignment shop around that caters more to children" - I poked around, asked around...and found this heaven sent, crunchy shop.

LOOK mamas! Look for something like this and drive as far as you have to go to get there. I go twice, MAYBE three times a year (like, a special trip for halloween costumes or whatever)...so it's okay that it's far from me. I save so much money and buy such great stuff....and the stuff that is "too worn" to consign ends up making me very popular at moms group clothing swaps, where I end up making out on even more awesome, perfectly good clothing items and gear.

Look for consignment shops, sign up for clothing swaps at the birthing center moms groups, etc....go on freecycle, whatever...they wear these clothes for practically MOMENTS....it's a shame of a money drain to buy new and buying new supports an industry which does not place a high enough value on the lives and efforts of mamas in other places. I buy second hand to save money, but even more so, because I stand united with mamas in far off lands...I can't jump a plane and go save them with my own hands...but I can do my best to keep my money out of the pockets of people who pretty much enslave them and create horror in their lives. luxlove.gif

Thanks for your replies!

We do have a great used items/natural/gentle parenting store near us, which I support and am registered at. I'm on the lookout for other ethical online resources for the convenience of our family and friends who prefer to shop online, or who don't live in the area and still want to share the happiness with us.

We already have most of what we need either through thrift shops, hand-me-downs, or garage sales, don't plan on buying much new, and make most toys and things ourselves, so this is for fun, handmade things that I know some of my friends might love to gift us, knowing each time my little guy wears that onsie with the sx-70 polaroid land camera screenprinted on it, (for example) I'll be thinking of them!

If you think of any unique, handmade shops I might support online, let me know!
