I hope this is OK to post here?
I would love the support of MDC mamas in helping put the brakes on a growing trend in NYC - I've cut and pasted the info below from the petition I authored. I realize this is the homebirth forum, I am a homebirther myself, but I feel this is both the safest place for this discussion on MDC, and the place where I'd find the most women interested.
Thanks for reading!!
It has come to my attention that many women in my community (Williamsburg Brooklyn, and NYC at large) are being met with resistance from their hospital or caregiver when they express their desire to take home their placenta after giving birth. This move toward noncooperation is not the direction in which many of us want to continue. I ask your support in convincing NYU Medical Center, one of the leaders in this new trend, to release healthy placentas to the mothers that desire them, as New York State allows. Please take a moment to sign the petition at the link below, and feel free to distribute freely.
NYU Medical Center: Mothers do not need an Undertaker for their Afterbirth!
Women who give birth at NYU Langone Medical Center and wish to keep their placentas have been forced to track down a licensed funeral director to rescue the fruit of their labor from the hospital morgue. Many women are choosing NYU because of their progressive Baby Friendly status; let's help mothers bond with their newborns and spend those early hours breastfeeding - not making phone calls and paying for an unnecessary service. Remind NYU that New York State allows hospitals to release healthy placentas that are wanted for religious or cultural purposes.
