This might be a silly question, but it was a real sticking point for me with DD's birth -- I'll be having my baby in a teaching hospital. Am I allowed to request that no residents be in the room during labor and birth? Or that only the doctor and/or nurse be in there with us? Last time it was a freaking circus and it didn't occur to me that I could ask people to leave.

My understanding is this: If you have private insurance or are private pay, yes. If you are on public health insurance (like Medicaid), then no.post #3 of 32/7/12 at 5:04am- wishin'&hopin'

I used to work in a teaching hospital. And, regardless of insurance, you can ask that students physicians or student nurses not participate in your care. When I gave birth to my son there was a student nurse there who I didn't want to actually do anything medically, but I didn't mind her there...so I asked her to take pictures during the delivery :) She did a great job and we have tons of photos :)
