NC Mtn Mama - I'm LOVING my hypnobabies classes. I'm guessing I'd love the homestudy too.

No kidding, Tulafina, you've got it covered!  But I especially appreciate what you say about the warm belly.  As an academic, I sit still reading a lot, and as an academic in the winter in Montana, it means I sit still reading a lot with a warm water bottle on my lap.  I've noticed that I can play the "poking game" with baby with the warm water bottle- he/she tends to push over towards the side that the water bottle is on.  :)  Takes after mama, I guess.

This is my fourth and I have tweaked things each time.  I'm seeing chiro weekly now and may up to twice a week around the 34 week mark.  I drink a daily infusion of RRL, nettle, alfalfa and oat straw tea. Taking prenatal plus extra cal/mag, D, C, CLO and iron. Daily probiotic which I will double up on, and add in some GSE, garlic and echinacea the week or two before my GBS test. Was + with first two kids then did this regime and was negative last time.  I'm still working out like a machine.  I get this weird Extra workout drive in the third trimester....total training mode. Maybe from years personal training but I'm pretty convinced workouts can fix anything for me, lol.

Im working hard on the extra vitamins and such, only because my youngest two are mid-health issues and I'm not getting much sleep due to tending to them. I'm really worried I'll be a zombie the day in go into labor and am trying to prime myself.

I do have a bottle of gentle birth, which I also used last pregnancy. Not sure if will use that, epo, both, or neither.

Dont give me too much credit. The working out is 90% vanity driven and rest is sheer fear of falling over from fatigue in labor, lol.

Haha!  This is my fourth too. With my two previous pregnancies I was GBS positive. Before the test the last time I tried a bunch of stuff, similar to you but still for positive results. I'm pondering the garlic clove inserted vaginally this time but worried about a really garlicy smell that my OB will notice when he does the swab. I know that I can refuse the antibiotics but I really don't want to fight it. I dunno maybe I'm tired :)

I waffle back and forth on whether I care about being GBS+.  I'm going to have to have a hep-lock anyway because my hospital requires it for VBACs, so a part of me says forget all of the supplements (that I'll probably forget half of the time anyway) and just go along with being hooked to the IV for 30 min, unhooked, then hooked up again.  I dunno.

My thing is that my body doesn't recover well after having antibiotics. My good bacteria take a while to balance out again. I've also been given verbal knowledge that Antibiotics mess with breastmilk. Aside from the fact that both times I've been positive, there hasn't been enough time for me to get the full dose before my water breaks and baby is out. It's so fast that they really have next to no chance of getting sick.

If I am GBS+ I won't decline...mainly due to lack of fight. :)  My only kicker is being allergic to the abx they usually give, so my alternative abx have to be given 8 hr apart. Which, well, frankly is not likely to happen. Which then leads to them saying baby needs to stay at least 48 hrs, etc.  We are lucky we are dear friends with our ped who, with our 2nd, just signed us out at 24 hr and said she would swing by the next day at 48 hr and make sure DD2 was fine.

I had the abx with DS1 and got a horrific case of thrush that lasted 8 weeks after birth:( It just reeks havoc on my system. I'm also allergic to Penicillin so the other kind they gave me was useless in my opinion. There are times when abx are needed and this is one of those times that unless you have ruptured membranes for 18+ hrs, a preemie baby or you're heavily colonized, I would skip it. You can totally refuse or arrive too late. Its your body:) If it means leaving after 24hrs, AMA, I wouldn't hesitate. In Canada they don't tend to harass you as much, though. Maybe that's why UC is so appealing to me:) Gloria Lemay has an excellent blog post on GBS. I'll try to find it.

Tula, I think that I found the information that you were talking about.... now it just makes me want to go with the antibiotics if i'm positive....

Why?

I asked my MW about GBS and what I could do if I was positive and she said there is some kind of douche (I'm pretty sure that is the first time I've ever written that word) that you can use during labor and birth that is as effective as IV antibiotics.  My labor with DD was only 4 hrs so I would be unlikely to have time for IV anyway.  I've never been GBS + but I will still get tested and probably use this alternative treatment if I am.  Sorry I don't know more details about it, my MW said it is being used in Europe with good results.

It's called Hibiclens. A hospital would never go for it but I have heard a lot about it.

Tula, if I read the same info as you it still painted out the dangers of GBS if you don't get treated. Maybe I read the wrong thing.

AMB- it would definitely be against routine abx use if it was written by Gloria Lemay. I'll be on the comp. today so I'll find the info:)

The other thing is, many places don't routinely test for GBS. The UK being one of them. The mortality rates are the same, I believe. We tend to have more babies die from E-coli(I'm pretty it's this...have to double check) because we treat so heavily with abx.

Here it is:) Gloria Lemay is a Canadian midwife and is one of the speakers at the Trust Birth Conference this April. She's extremely well known and has been a midwife for around 30 years. She is amazing:) Her blog has some great info. Same with Lisa Barrett's birth blog. She is one of the most well known midwives in Australia.

Yikes, I didn't think to ask what they give you abx-wise.  I'm allergic to penicillin too.  I know they gave me keflex after my c-section, and I did okay with that, but apparently its not that strong.  So what do they give you instead of the penicillin?

clindamycin

I'm pretty sure they used amoxacillin. I'm thinking surely they can use a few different types but the thing is, they don't work as well and they said I'd need more because it wasn't as strong. I only received 1 bag because I arrived really late and it still did a number on me. This is why, if I had to birth in a hospital setting, I would do absolutely everything in my power to test negative. Mega doses of probiotics, vaginal garlic, vitamin C daily, echinacea, plus hydrogen peroxide washes. Heck, I'd even bring a bottle and douse myself down before the test. I know it's cheating so to speak or giving false results, but for me, I'm not worried about GBS for 1 second. I have full term babies, push them out quickly and my water breaks close to the time of birthing. I know the signs and symptoms of GBS too. For me, I need that "negative" result for the Dr's so they'll leave me and my baby alone. Whatever it takes to achieve that, I'm willing to do. I think everyone just needs to really research all about it. The chances of baby getting GBS even if you're positive, the effects on babe from the abx(higher chance of coming down with something because the abx have killed the good flora in your vagina and in babes gut), the effects on you, your nursing relationship, your labour(it really stung when they were administering it).
