My goodness- my 11 lb 4 oz baby was born at 40 weeks with perfect blood sugars and she is a tiny, healthy 5 year old now and my 9 lb 10 oz baby born at 38 weeks also had perfect blood sugars and he is a perfectly sized little 3 year old boy in the 50th percentile now. I have never even had blood sugar levels within the warning range (I don't know the numbers). I am 5'4 and normally 148 lbs and DH is 5'7 170 lbs and we just grow ridiculously large babies. No one has ever even whispered under their breath "GD baby" around me. My babies were fine and perfectly healthy immediately after birth. They didn't have to see any specialists, no time in the NICU and they required no supplementation- I was able to breastfeed them immediately following my c-sections. I cannot wait to see what size I deliver this time around :)

Linnie -- can I just say how impressed I am that you had an 11 lb 4 oz baby! you are a rock star orngtongue.gif

I'm really amazed at the breadth and depth of prenatal diagnosis. Some women just have big babies. I thought maybe I was one of them (DS was 8 lb 11 oz), but I pale in comparison to Linnie winky.gif

Since I had GD last time and since I've been on metformin for PCOS one doctor said he's pretty sure I'll get it this time. I don't know why we are bothering with the tests. I have the reader from last time and have tested some but it is difficult to determine when. What's an hour after a meal if I'm not really eating meals just eating small amounts throughout the day. I don't even like food much anymore.

And your blood sugar numbers are really low.

And it does nothing to protect babies from getting diabetes later in life.  That is complete BS.  There has been no link whatsoever between birth weight and diabetes.  Nor has there been a link between GD diagnosis and later diabetes for mom.  That is total misinformation aimed at scaring parents into doing what the doctor wants.

THANK YOU! Glad to know my bs meter is functioning properly cuz it was going off like crazy when she started rattling off the doom threats about big babies.

It's amazing how much they wear you down with the fear tactics...I was going to decline the whole shebang but got so tired of the arguing and having to defend myself to the mw every time...I finally gave up.

linnie, how big were you when you were born? dp says first babies usually take after the mom's birth weight. Is that true for you?! Are you measuring big? Is the little one measuring big?!

Sara I'm not Linnie (nor have I had such a big babe as Linnie - largest was 10.4) BUT I was barely 7 pounds at birth and my first was 9.6.

holy moly. so I could very well have a large baby?! I want one that doesn't seem too 'breakable', if you know what I mean! haha

thanks for chiming in. I was 7lbs 8 oz. little sis was 8lbs 4 I think.

If you've ever seen a 5 lber, an 8 lber doesn't seem so breakable any more.

And trust me, after you push them out, they don't seem so small any more.  winky.gif

haha! two great points cristeen!

My DD seemed so small to me <3 I have a feeling this baby is bigger somehow! I'm still nursing yet gained 40lbs thus far and the baby seems SOO tall already so IDK

I was the first born and I was two weeks overdue and I was 8 lbs 4 oz. My mom is super tiny. After she had me, she was 96 lbs. I ended up tearing out her cervix and my two brothers had to get stitched in after me. My brother that was born 17 months later was almost 9 lbs and then six years after that, she had a suprise baby that she started labouring at 28 weeks with and was on bedrest at the hospital until he was born around 35 weeks and he was 5.5 lbs at 35 weeks which would have made him a big baby if he had stayed until her due date. My hubby was 7 lbs 9 oz.

Currently (28 weeks 2 days), I am measuring perfectly. I have an OB appt tmw so we shall see if that's still true. I have all my records from my first two pregnancies and like clockwork, at 34 weeks, I start measuring HUGE. I wonder if that will happen this time. My mom thinks that I look smaller this pregnancy and I do agree. I have only gained around 18 lbs this time so far and with my first two, I was already at a 40 lb weight gain. Due to the fact that I will most likely be a scheduled c-section (unless I naturally go into labour at 37 weeks- at which time my OB said he'd let me try a VBAC, yay yay yay!),  I will have this baby at 38 weeks just like my second. I am guessing he will be around 9 which would make him my smallest. I remember my midwife estimating that my first was 8 lbs 4 oz when I was 34 weeks- lmao! I know how inaccurate that can be but she was probably right seeing as how she broke the 11 lb barrier!

I LOVE that my babies feel less breakable. I am very VERY clutzy and I like that they are giant when I hold onto them. I don't know how to hold "normal" sized babies! lol.  The other thing with my babies, is that they are long- 22 inches and 22.5 inches. DH is a short man so we have no idea where that comes from either. I have to say once again, that at 5 and 3 years old, they are on the smallish to average side of the chart and in comparison with their peers. You would have never guessed that my 5 year old little girl was over 11 lbs. That's still what the dr's say was so odd- that she was a first born and she is female. If she was my fourth and male, they would understand it more.

wow linnie, thanks for all of the details! I have a wiggly baby on my lap, so this will probably be short.

I think its crazy how big your two were. I hope I have a biggish kiddo. Shay was fairly huge and he was born a week early. I guess only time will tell. I'm pretty tall for a women (5'8") and I know I was on the short size up until like 5th grade. Genetics are fascinating, I cannot wait to see what happens with our bigger kiddos and with the little guys too! Its gonna be super fun.

It's interesting to me how much they change.  I'm fairly short at 5'4".  But I expected a big baby, like Linnie's 11 lber.  I got an 8 lber.  8 even.  And 21 inches long, born just a couple days after his EDD, he was super skinny until 9 mos.  And yet at almost 2 1/2, he's the size of your average 4 year old.  He's 40 lbs and about 40 inches tall.  When he's out in public acting like your average 2 yr old, people give me those looks, because he doesn't look like a 2 yo.  Much less an autistic 2 yo.

That's crazy too! Super skinny until 9 months and then he grew like he meant it?! Good for him!

i have a friend who was just induced early and her baby is tiny like 9/5 inches and only 5 lbs... I'm kind of upset about the induction so early and baby being so tiny... but this is totally pregnant wack-o mama reaction... why am I upset?!

Was she induced to save the baby or induced solely on 'big baby' fear mongering?

I still have yet to go in for the 3 hour.....

I was attending a conference and am flying home tomorrow. On top of that I had a really nasty sinus infection an was on antibiotics before leaving home for the conference, so I postponed the test.  Luckily my OB thinks it;ll be no issue, though he would have preferred that I take it before traveling, but he wasn't a pain about it. I'll keep you posted!

she had some pre-e stuff, and low fluid, so it wasn't a size thing... but baby is so tiny!  that same week another friend had a 9 lb baby... huge difference between the two development wise....
