Co-sleeping & Side-Car Cribs

We're investigating co-sleeping arrangements with a side-car crib, and I wonder if anyone has any experience or info?  I'd love to hear your thoughts, recommendations, experiences, advice against... whatever you have to share.

Here are a couple of options that we've been looking at:

I like this one because it's portable, so we can travel easily to and stay at our in-laws, and it will adapt to multiple situations as the baby grows.  I'm not sure how safe it is when the baby starts to pull up to standing though.

Then there's this DIY option:

This is fabulous and it looks relatively easy to do.  My only concern is what we would do when we travel to the in-laws.

We have coslept with all of our children for about the first 2 years (yet they all still sleep with me whenever DH works).  I've never used a co-sleeper.  We did a side-carred crib for a VERY short time, and then we switched to sidecarring the toddler bed instead and that was much nicer for us. (same size, but less to it (no sides and what-not)  However, we don't do it so the baby can sleep there, we do it just for the extra space.  So I guess I can't help with the travel dilemma.  (however we do have the smaller, "travel" size Pack N Play that I use beside my bed for the first month or so, just to sort of keep baby contained in a place where other little ones can't as easily get to him/her, and it ends up slightly lower than my bed but still works out quite well (but like I said, baby sleeps WITH us...just naps or occassionaly starts out in the PNP).  But it would be a great option for travel if we needed it!
