Questions about inducing lactation and breastfeeding adopted infant

Thread Starter

We are just starting the adoption process for a newborn.  Our agency has told us we will have a 12-18 month wait.  We will not know that we are getting a baby until the day we take him/her home.  I'm very interested in breastfeeding and have been reading up on the different protocols, but I'm not sure which way to go.

Because we don't know when it will happen, I'm hesitant to start pumping.  I also work full-time.  More than likely I would not be able to pump at work so would it even be worth it to try and pump before and after work and while I'm at home?  Would taking domperidone on its own without pumping be of any benefit?  Or should I just start taking it when we get a baby and using a supplemental nursing system with either donated milk or formula?

Lots of questions.  Does anyone have any insight as to what they would do in my situation?  (This will be our first child, I have never been pregnant).

Hello, I am a pumping mom and I don't have much info on breastfeeding an adopted baby, but I think there is a special forum on here for the adopted child.

Since you have a 12 - 18 month wait, I think it would be safe to wait at least 11 months before starting to worry about re-lactation. The domperidone only works if you are pumping to help build supply.

I bet you are real excited about the possibility of starting a family. Congrats to you!
