How soon do you start buying things for baby?

I'm kind of here and there on this.. I feel like buying something so soon (9 weeks!) will jinx me.  Silly, I know.  The elephant in the room is still there, shrinking, yet still hard to ignore!  I heard the heartbeat today so I'm feeling more "okay" with things.  My nipples feel like they're going to fall off, and I got suddenly nauseated this evening.

I did make a trip to the thrift store.. I was able to get 3 Halo sleep sacs and a fleece sleeper thing (for over the clothes, like a jacket) for the car seat.  It has the Chicago Bears logo on it and was 90 cents- no way could I pass that up!

I've also bought diaper making stuff, since I feel like that needs an early start as I'm pretty much a novice seamstress lol.gif

Really though, all I need to buy is a car seat, new moby, and a crib.  And some shirts and socks for baby.  I'm knitting the longies and I have plenty of yarn.  Medicaid will give me a breastpump.. yay!  I'd ideally like to look for sales, but my DH keeps telling me it's too soon.

When are you going to buy things for baby?

I started buying stuff before this little one was even conceived!  Its part of my cunning strategy to lure them here!  No seriously, I can't pass up a bargain at an op shop (what they call thrift shop here).  So far I've picked up an organic cotton baby hat (don't need one it was just a symbolic purchase!), for $1, a perfectly perfect car seat (for free as against the law for op shops to sell them here, yay!), a stunning lamb skin for $5 and my most expensive purchase to date, an amber necklace for $10 from a garage sale.

I'm not a big fan of green or yellow, so looking forward to finding out gender so I can get some nice wool and knit some longies.  Got tons of clothes and nappies left over from the girls, so I'll try and use that first, gender permitting!

I will probably start buying once I find out baby's sex. Right now I am working on a list of what I need. I keep selling all of my baby stuff at consignment thinking that it's the last baby and SURPRISE!

WindyCityMom- Look into making your own moby style wrap.  I did and it was MUCH cheaper.  I have also made mei tai baby carriers for cheap, too.  Etsy (and even ebay) has some carriers for sale for really good prices.  And... the baby K'tan carrier looks super easy to use (and make). I already cut out fabric for that and the fabric at $3/yd put the cost at around $6 or less.  Can't beat that.  There are tutorials for baby carriers all over the net!

AFM- I have a ton of girl things, but if I find out it is a boy (yikes!  I am scared of boys!) I will buy more things then.  I keep my eyes open from the day I get pregnant for good gender neutral stuff, though! :)  It's never too early if it is a good deal!

I really don't need a lot.  I'll make clothes and diapers (already made a Moby-like wrap from hemp jersey) and we have an infant car seat.

The only things I'll need to purchase (unless this is a boy!) are: convertible car seat, new nursing bras and new merino wool nursing pads (LIFE-ALTERING GOODIES!).. and... that's all, really.  Well, since I've never had a baby in September, I might need some smaller clothes (like 0-3/3-6) in winter styles since three of my four girls were March babies.  That's really all I think!

As for when to get those things... I'm thinking I'll wait until passing 12 weeks or so.  Not too far down the road since I'm 10w3d.

I've started listing what I'll need to buy, but I haven't thought to buy anything yet.  We'll need to buy a new infant car seat, but I won't do that until at least summer.  I watch expiration dates, and I'll want to have the most current options.  We'll be buying a new dresser either for the baby or perhaps for DD1 depending on how we end up setting up rooms.  I imagine I'll buy some diaper stuff, but I've got a decent newborn stash.  If this is a boy, we'll need clothes.  I imagine we'll buy some clothes regardless of gender.

I have been pricing and making some decisions about midwives, doulas, placenta encapsulation, and mother's helpers.  I think my priorities are different this go round.

Here I was thinking that I wouldn't really need anything but I completely forgot about expiring car seats.  I need to look into that.  I guess we'll need some new furniture too - either for DS or the baby but I am a big Craigslist shopper for that.  I do also need a new car seat for DS who is simply enormous for his age - he's the exact weight of our second seat's limit.

I am waiting til we find out genders. For things like car seats etc I am waiting til about 22 weeks out of nothing but silly fear and superstition.

I had a long reply here, and my DD managed to delete the whole thing!

We gave away A LOT of our baby things. However, we still have the car seat, bought new in August 2010, the stroller it snaps into, the crib and the swing. I still have my Moby, but I gave away my Baby K'Tan, which I found I used a lot more than the Moby, because it did the same thing, but without the wrapping.

I have my heart set on buying an Amish hickory style rocking chair, I fell in love with one with DD2 and didn't buy it, and wished I had all the time, and a really nice ring sling, like maybe a Sakura Bloom. I also want a new Baby K'Tan and a baby wearing coat.

I am going to *need* to get a double stroller, eventually, I figure at first I'll wear the newbie and put the newly two year old "big sister" in the stroller. But we go to the bus 2x a day to get the big kids, so we're out on the roads a fair bit.

I also gave away my "baby holders" and on the fourth, with a toddler, I know I will need them. Like the bouncy chair, bumbo, exersaucer...

Last time I picked up a lot from friends, for free, or at Mom to Mom sale in the spring and early summer. I figure I'll do the same again. I also hope that people will give me back the things I gave them, because we were *done,* if they still have them.

I probably won't start buying things until the spring Mom to Mom sales, so like April. We also will likely find out sex, because we are planning to move and I'll only take what I need, and sell the rest. We didn't find out last time, and that was fun, but I figure this time, the *baby* is the surprise!!

We are pretty set. I had two fall/winter babies already so I don't need much at all. Today I did buy 2 NB diaper covers and 12 prefolds, since I apparently only have 12 left over from DS.

I started shopping over a year ago. This way I could go to garage sales, thrift stores, etc and get the brands I wanted cheaply. I just got an Arm's Reach co-sleeper yesterday off of Craigslist. The only things left on the list are: a high chair, swing, pacifier (?), bibs, washcloths and towels. I'm covered for a boy or a girl. I even have the breast pump! Once I find out the gender I may get some leggings, diaper covers and cloth diapers that are more boy-ish or girl-ish. I'm just waiting to feel less tired all the time so I can organize all the stuff! xo
