Echinacea in pregnancy? « Back to Group Discussions

The rest of my family are all coming down with a nasty cold, which is usually when I break out the Echinacea tea for myself...but I'm not sure if this is ok in pregnancy!  Anyone have any insight?

There aren’t many studies as to Echinacea and pregnancy. Most doctors say to avoid any herbal supplements, especially during the first trimester. I would avoid it…

Echinacea is pretty strong, and I would avoid it.  I think Black Elderberry is ok (though obviously you want to research that), and of course, gargling with salt water is good for killing throat germs.

I'm a midwife and think its fine for pregnancy! I'd ask your care provider and see what they think though.
