I typically spend $500 per month (in food stamps) on groceries. If I go to Whole foods I end up getting just a little bit more than I would at our local health food store. Things are cheaper there by about $1 per item, lol. But I have to pay for gas for a three hour trip which is about twenty bucks. So if I go to whole foods every week I spend way more on gas but I get more than a hundred items each month, so whole foods is actually a little cheaper. But the local health food store gives discounts for any bulk foods bought as a pound or greater and takes food stamps for more items.

Sponsored Linkspost #2 of 52/22/12 at 1:26pmSupporting your local health food store is probably the best for weekly trips, and maybe one monthly trip to Whole Foods.
I love your siggy!!! But yeah I have pretty much been supporting the local health food store and keep hearing other people complain about their prices but to me it just seemed more practical.Quote:post #4 of 52/22/12 at 6:42pm- dziejen

Not only is supporting a local business a good thing, it sounds like it takes you a lot more time to go to Whole Foods. Your time is valuable too - if it is a small difference then it makes sense to shop local as often as possible and save your cash in your pocket for expenses that come up. Maybe you could buy and prepare more food in bulk and save the time spent driving on preparing food instead? Better for the local economy, your environment and maybe even your sanity if you are like me and hate grocery shopping

You are soo right! I spent my extra time this week making a day trip to Yosemite to go hiking with my kids:) It's actually closer than whole foods, lol and most of the trip back was down hill so I got great gas mileage. I love the local healh food store and plan to primarly shop there for food from now on. I think I will actually miss it when I move out of here!Return HomeBack to Forum: Frugality & Finances- Pay more at Local HFS or pay for gas and less for groceries at Whole Foods?
