When to visit a doctor for allergies (new episodes of hives in 2.5 year old)

My daughter just started having episodes of hives last week. There were just a few at first, and then she's had a couple of episodes where she had a plaque of hives on her chest or her lower back. They go away almost immediately when I give her a dose of benedryl, and usually don't return after the dose wears off.

I've been keeping a food/activity journal for several days and can't find any very obvious pattern. Yesterday she had a rash, then had stomach pain, pooped, and the rash immediately went away on its own. Don't know if it was just a coincidence or not.

Should I take her to an allergist? A general doctor? (We're in the process of switching peds because hers has ceased to have patient-friendly policies.) Or should I wait a while to see if I can discern a pattern or if this passes on its own?

Thanks for any guidance on this! I'm new to the world of child allergies and can't get guidance on the phone from her doc--they require an appointment to answer questions).

I think the right answer was: wait, but keep trying things. I think the culprit was our new duvet from Ikea. We figured this out and removed it from the bed. No rash since then. We'll see!

It's so great that  you are paying great attention!  I have a child with a severe bee allergy--and in that scenario hives can be life threatening.  The crazy thing about allergies is that they can get successively worse--quickly.  I think you are well served to go directly to an allergist.  Do your best to write down all the food and environmental (detergents, bath soap, etc) inputs she on the days with hives!  Good luck!
