Best schools for aspergers child in western suburbs?

Thread Starter

We're planning on moving back to the western suburbs.  Our ds will be starting school next year after homeschooling. He has aspergers and challenging behavior that goes along with that.

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with the schools special ed programs in the western suburbs?

We're thinking of:

Elmhurst

La Grange

La Grange Park

Lombard

Itasca

Wheaton

Glen Ellyn

Thank you for any feedback you may have.

Hi! Did you have any success with your quest for an aspergers friendly school? My son is 7 and has aspergers. We left Chicago for Iowa hoping to find a better school, and weren't successful. We're considering moving back to the Western Suburbs. We're looking at similar areas (LaGrange/Brookfield).  Have you had success?

Thanks.

My son has autism, but we live in the North suburbs.. On my yahoo autism group, parents say they're very happy with the Naperville school district. I've heard not as positive things about Wheaton and Glen Ellyn districts..

You might have better luck finding more in depth answers by posting this on a local autism group. This one is fairly active: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/AutismNews/

I see this was posted in March of 2012 so it may be too late, but I thought I'd post a response in case anyone else comes across this in the future.

My 8 year old Aspie was homeschooled up until this year, 2nd grade, when we put him in Lincoln Elementary in Wheaton. They have been PHENOMENAL in helping us navigate the IEP process, accommodating him both before and after, and just really exceeding our expectations.

That said, we have decided that homeschooling is still best for my son and our family and we'll be bringing him home again next year - but the school is also being great at working with us to continue services and potentially allow him to participate part-time next year in some non-core stuff.

I can't say enough good things about this school, so far as public schools go.
