cape ideas?

It will be my sil 40th in a couple of weeks. my brother is throwing a surprise party and would like me to make a cape for her to wear all nite. He would like something on the back like "look at me - Im forty!" or something else along those lines.
I'm at a loss for specifics - fabric; sayings; etc. and, has anyone ever seen a cape pattern?

I wouldn't bother with a pattern. I've seen them, but if you don't want a hood, it is ridiculously easy, especially if it is just for fun and not something that will be handed down in the family forever. I would measure an idea of how wide you want the bottom to be (like, say 2 yds for example), how long you want it to be (you could do a shorter one and just pick 2 yds of 45" fabric or you could turn the fabric on it's side so the selvage is perpendicular to the ground and sew as many pieces together as you need to make your width measurement) then it is just a matter of gathering the top and sewing a casing over it (like apron strings) and you are done. Use wonder under to cut and apply the words or get iron on lettering. You could even alter an apron pattern (the kind that just go around your waist) if you want a little more of a walk-thru. You could line it if you went with idea #2 and didn't want the seams to show on the inside, though if you serge/zigzag them, it isn't going to look bad anyway.

I'd use easy to work with/inexpensive fabric (no nylon or stretch). You can find lots of options in weight and print on clearance tables...

If you want one that falls a little more smoothly, for the sake of being able to read what's on the back, try planning it as a full circle or 3/4 of a circle. Cut several wedges with no points and sew them together like a pie. Picture a fat donut - there will be a hole in the middle for the neck. If you do a full circle, there will be a break in your donut. If you do 3/4 circle, there will be a big slice missing from your donut. Like when my college roommate would take a little plastic knife and cut a slice from a donut and leave the rest in the box to make the rest of us feel like gluttons...

Thanks for the replies!
I think I will try and wing it - no pattern.
