basic new baby medicine cabinet list?

Thread Starter

hi,

i'm pregnant with our first (due in july) and i'm making a list of the "medicinal" things to have on hand before baby arrives. we are not really into over the counter medication, almost never take tylenol or aspirin or things like that and always try to cure things naturally first. we do live in a small (300 people), remote and isolated town so i do want to have certain things on hand if the need arrises.

what should go on that list?

thanks! :)

Arnica Gel and arnica tabs, for when they fall and bump themselves.

Bulb syringe.

Saline stuff like Little Noses to help "blow their nose" if they get stuffy or have a cold.

There are also cold and flu homeopathic tabs for kids.

Teething tabs (Hylands) and or gel and cold stuff for them to chew on.

Peroxide

Band-aids

That's about all we used.

My oldest at about 2 was sick for a week and did get 1 dose of children's Tylenol when she was saying she was hurting.

We don't bring down fevers in our house, so the pain relievers are used for pain.

To add to the above:

Warm mist humidifier
Baby Vicks (for the soles of their feet)
Vitamin C tabs (1,000mg) for you--baby will get some through your breastmilk
Ditto vitamin D3

I would keep some infant Motrin (dye free) on hand, just in case

Infants don't need much; as they get older and more mobile, you'll definitely want band-aids & peroxide, arnica, and teething tabs on hand

Maybe research some colic/tummy remedies as well--gripe water and so forth. There came a time with #1 when I was desperate to try anything and going to the store w a screaming infant wasn't a good option!

Oh, and baby probiotics, tea tree oil, apple cider vinegar, coconut oil and other thrush/yeast remedies

We gave babies vitamin D. First was fine with drops, second would only take dissolvable tabs.

The big brands we use with our littles are WishGarden Herbs, Herbs for Kids, and Hylands. Most are for a little bit older child, not newborns. WishGarden has a nice herbal powder for the cord stump.

A basic first aid kit is good - band-aids, guaze and tape, cotton balls, q-tips, etc...

Breastmilk is really one of the best medicines to have! Here is a good article - http://mothering.com/breastfeeding/more-ways-use-breastmilk

Motherlove has a nice diaper rash/thrush salve that I like - good for baby and momma.

Just in case anyone is vegetarian and buying vitamin D, you want to get D2. That one's the vegetarian version of the vitamin. The D3 is animal-derived.

Olive oil...

I mean, not so much as "medicine" (though I suppose it may be used as such?) but I keep it with my baby medicines for newborn because I use it the first couple days to make the meconium SUPER easy to wipe off... little bit of olive oil on babys bum at each diaper change, doesn't harm baby and you don't have to scrub that sticky tar poo off.

essential clove oil, mixed wirh olive oil works  as a numbing agent for teething.  i agree with the probiotics for sure!

A little warm olive oil in the ear is good for soothing ear infections, too- two of my babes had a lot of issues with ear infections so we got good at this one.

Then again, breast milk is even better for ear and eye infections. For some reason the memory of me desperately leaning over and expressing milk into a crying baby's ear at 3 in the morning seems really funny now, but it sure wasn't then!
