Where/How are you measuring?

Ok so i am 32 weeks 4 days... Due May third... I have seen so many people say where they are measuring, ahead or behind or just right... I havent had any measurments, not that i know of.. How is yours done?

Usually my appointments are the heartbeat, and the measuring tape but she never tells me what the measuring tape says. I have an appointment in two weeks for the "measurments" her weight length etc... what all does this entail U/S?

Sometimes the OB or midwife will measure your fundous height which is the height of your belly (uterus) from your pubic bone to the top under your ribs somewhere where it ends....  so it goes like this I'm 30 weeks so i would be about 30 cm measured with a tape measure. Note there is some variance they have by a few cm either way but its just a quick assessment usually done after 24 ish weeks or so. If someone is say 28 weeks preg and they measure 17 cm this could be a red flag KWIM? so if  she has not said anything then you are certain to be fine....As far as baby goes sounds like an U/S to measure your LO length of them, sometimes they do a more in dept length of femur and arm bones spine and head circumference etc... I'm sure they would do this at least once in a pregnancy unless you don't want them to. its just an U/S so nothing invasive. and its fun to see the LO on the screen :-)

My OB measures my fundus height every time and says it's perfect, but I assume this is based on my adjusted due date. I find the whole thing fascinating. I got a negative pregnancy test on day 28 of my cycle, and assumed I wasn't pregnant. Later that week, when I still hadn't gotten my period, I tested again and it was positive! At 7 weeks or so I had some bleeding, so I had an early ultrasound, which "dated" me a week behind my LMP due date. So they adjusted my due date. However, at my 20-week anatomy scan the ultrasound tech said the baby was measuring a little ahead. I asked my OB if they would adjust my due date again, and she said that they've found the early ultrasound (before 7 weeks) to be the most accurate for dating. It makes sense to me when I think about my late positive. I guess I most have either ovulated late or implanted late.

But now I'm rambling!

They have been measuring me the past few appointments and I am always ahead. At 26 weeks I measured at 30 and at 30 weeks I measured at 35. But I also have a nice layer of fat surrounding my belly so I can only assume that adds a couple cms...lol. My u/s is next monday and she said that will be a more accurate representation of how big he is, so at that point we can really see how far ahead he is measuring. Cuz 35 seems like a huge jump from 30!

At my last appointment I was 29 weeks and my mw said I measured 29cm exactly. That's laying down...when I'm standing up, I look enormous. But when I'm laying down, apparently my fundus is entirely normal-sized. smile.gif She said usually 2 cms either way is considered normal.

I was measuring 35 at my 32 week apt.

Typically by the end of preg I am measuring in the low 50's...I grow big babies and my extra fat accounts for the huge growth. lol

I measured 35 at my 32 week appt too, Onemore.  Up until now I have only been measuring 1 cm ahead so that was quite the jump in 2 weeks.  We'll see what happens next time as I will have a different midwife and I've heard part of it can be who is measuring you.

I also measured 35 w at my 32 w appointment this morning. And my midwife thinks it's because the baby has flipped! He seems to be head up now. They said they don't worry about it until 36 weeks so he has a month to make his way back down.

Lol poppyseed! This reminds me of when my son was breech and we actually shined a light on my belly because the midwife told us that babies are attracted to the light and will sometimes turn toward it.

I've heard that too!  Or have your partner talk to the baby "down there".  lol  I don't know if it works, but it wouldn't hurt anything to try.

At my 30 week appt. I measured 32cm.  Today, at my 32 week appt. I measured 32.5cm

My fundal height has been right on spot, every time. However, I am bigger than with my other babies ( I know this from good journaling) , and when i think about it, I actually measured 1-2 cm behind with them towards around this point ( even with polyhydramnios )- so measuring on track this time is like measuring big for me, I guess.

Intuition-wise, I just felt ( and continue to feel) like this baby is bigger. The u/s says the same thing, but we know how those can be. My personal thoughts are that this little one is BIG, compared to my other babies, but robably not as big as the u/s is trying to tell me. I just think it is funny that my fundal height measures on track, and baby feels like this little beefcake :D

The "measuring tape" is for the fundal height.  They're measuring from the top of your pubis to the top of your fundus (uterus).  The measurements don't actually mean anything by themselves - for many women they are step in step with weeks gestation, but for many women they're not.  They're mostly just watching to see that growth is happening and they really want it to happen linearly (so that in 2 weeks you grow 2 cm, but then in another 2 weeks you didn't grow 4 or stop growing alltogether).  My fundal height is way off - I was measuring something like 35 cm at 28 wks.  But my growth is even, about 2 cm every 2 wks, so it's not a concern.

Yep I'm measuring spot on with the tape measure (32 at 32 weeks, etc) - but I think my belly is sticking out a lot farther - like a torpedo! But the dr isn't concerned about too much fluid anymore since my tape measure measurements are on track. I think it is really weird and amazing that cm and weeks can be so aligned.

I measured myself the other day and got 41cm.  I'm pretty sure I did it wrong since I measured 32 at MW appt. 2 weeks ago.  lol

maybe you started too low?

I think I went too high.  When she measured me today she got 34.  Much more reasonable!  lol

haha! Yeah, I can't figure out where the top of my uterus is either.

Interesting observation:  When she measured me at my appt. yesterday I noticed that my linea nigra stops at the same place my uterus stops.  Thinking back, I'm pretty sure it's been that way the whole time (growing with my uterus).  Hmm...
