1-hour O'Sullivan Glucose Test

Has anyone else had complications after taking the 1-hour O'Sullivan glucose test that is administered around the 28th week of pregnancy?

I had my test on Monday, and everything went fine until about 1.5 hours after drinking the overly sweetened fruit punch flavored glucose liquid. As I was checking out at the doctor's office, I became lightheaded, sweaty, my vision blurred and I lost my hearing. I had to sit down for a couple of minutes. The billing coordinator brought me a small cup of water and some pretzels. I regained consciousness within 5 minutes and then went and sat in my car with my husband. Thankfully, I did not try to be tough and drive home since as soon as I got in my husband's car and we were on the way home (less than 2 miles from the doctor's office), I blacked out again. This lasted until my husband carried me into our house and I got more water, half of a banana and some peanut butter in my system. Besides feeling weak the rest of the day, I also had an upset stomach (diarrhea) for the next 36 hours.  

I called the doctor's office to let them know what was going on. They said that although this isn't common, that it does happen to some women, especially if you have a very clean diet and have a low BMI. They have actually received calls from the ER regarding other women having issues handling the extreme amount of glucose.

If you have not had this test yet, please be careful and know that although it is unlikely that you will have any issues, you still might want to have someone else go with you to this doctor's visit just in case something does happen. I am still thanking God that I did not drive home that morning.

Have you received test results yet, to rule out GD?

Yes, I received the test results and I do not have gestational diabetes or diabetes for that matter. Thanks for asking!

Yes, I had that happen to me my first pregnancy. It was reactive hypoglycemia and I did not have GD. The research shows that women who experience reactive hypoglycemia are pretty unlikely to have GD. Some people mistakenly claim the opposite, but studies disagree with them. It doesn't mean you couldn't have it, but it is less likely.

Did you deliver your baby in a hospital? If so, did they allow you to eat some snacks (crackers, bites of a banana, etc...) every few hours or did you have to wait until the baby was born before you were allowed to eat and drink anything?

I'm having a hospital birth, but worried about not being able to snack if needed. Although I know many people say they had no interest in eating, I would still like the option of being able to have a snack if I feel a weak spell coming on, especially if I have a long labor.

I did have that baby in the hospital and I was allowed to eat, but only a "soft diet" so they sent up yogurt and I don't remember what else. By the time it came, I didn't feel well enough to eat any of it. I hope you don't have GD (I have it this time and it's not horrible, but it still stinks), the rest of your pregnancy is uneventful, and you have a great labor and delivery. :)

And I just now noticed that you had already stated you didn't have GD before I even posted. I don't know how I missed that. Sorry. lol
