It hurts to breastfeed on one side... advice needed

A little background, when I first start breast feeding my son my left side was very sore, but we worked through it and it has been fine since the first couple of weeks.  Lately though it has been very painful when my 14 month old nurses from that side again.  It brings tears to my eyes.  The problem started when he a a new tooth come in and he bit down on that side.  He was pulled off and told no.  Since then he has not done that again, but he cut through the skin on my nipple and caused a scab.

Two weeks later, the left side is still hurting and last night while he nursing in the evening there was blood coming out with the milk and causing a lot of pain.  I just don't know what to do.  Any advice would be great.

I've had a lot of pain while breastfeeding from mastitis and milk blisters, but no blood from that. I think that blood can come out with mastitis though. I'm just trying to brainstorm. I really don't know what could be going on. Maybe a possible infection? Which is basically what mastitis is.  Did the scab heal completely, or could it be coming open while he nurses maybe?

A nipple yeast infection is a possible culprit; check the inside of your child's mouth for white patches that would indicate thrush (an oral yeast infection that can be easily passed back and forth between mother and child).  I just got over one, cured by Nystatin. It was hurting me so badly that I'd either get tears or see stars, no joke.  I would consult a physician, lactation consultant, or a LLL leader.

Congratulations on both your new baby and your decision to breastfeed!  Please seek out some help with this issue; the more comfortable you are, the more likely you will be to continue nursing.  I found it to be difficult for the first couple of months and pretty wonderful afterwards.  Good luck.

Thanks ladies, I nursed last night on that side again and we didn't have blood, but I think I will get checked out since its still sore.  I love breastfeeding and have been doing it for 14 months now and plan on continue as long as he likes.
