Anyone else with a child with Tourette syndrome?

Thread Starter

My 7 1/2-yr old was diagnosed yesterday. It was really no surprise, because I grew up with a younger sister who has Tourette, and Micah has many, many of the same motor and vocal tics that I've seen in my sister over the past 40 years.

Just wondering if anyone else here is in the same boat. We homeschool, so while Micah would possibly be diagnosed with ADD or ADHD if he were in a classroom setting, it's pretty much a non-issue right now. He did receive his first reprimand from a stranger the day before we saw the neurologist; a librarian gave him a look and told him to stop making those noises, that he was in a library. And then told me that he could control them, that he just needed to be taught....ugh...irked.gif

Oh gosh....we heard that so many times from the principal of our son's school.  He was basically treated like he was deliberately being disruptive. "He's so smart he could control his behavior if he wanted to. "  duh.gif  This was a decade ago in Hawaii.  I would hope the world is a little more aware now.  But maybe not.

My son had a lot of vocal and motor tics.  We tried Staterra but he couldn't ever get past the first month on it.  I don't know what they are giving now.  We only tried that when his tics became very disruptive to him and his class in 5th grade.  We wound up just pulling him out of school.

Stress makes the tics worse for him.

He is 19 now and doing pretty well with it.  Mostly he has eye tics or this thing he does with his jaw. He plays guitar constantly.  It helps focus his anxiety which in turn helps with his tics.

Sounds like you are pretty familiar with Tourettes.  An your already homeschooling so that's great.  :)  As for the librarian she should go read a book on Tourettes!

I have two sons with it, ages 12 and 7. We homeschool, and honestly, it hasn't affected our life much at all.
