I'm wondering if anyone can direct me to a good resource on how much of our income should go to each category? I know housing is the most-I think I read it should be about 30% of your income- but I want a little more help in determining if we are breaking up our budget in a way that makes the most sense. We do not have any outstanding debts (student loans and credit cards are finally paid off!) and we do live within our means. BUT, when it comes to things that aren't necessarily fixed (clothing, gifts, etc.) DH and I are pretty different. I feel like we could both benefit from an "expert" opinion on this. Most of the things I find seem to be about staying out of debt, or making good investments. I'm having trouble finding stuff that helps explain the mechanics of family budgeting. I prefer books or online resources if you've got them. We have a pretty modest income and I don't think we could really pay a financial adviser. Thanks!
