Question for those of you using Zofran...

I am not a huge proponent of drugs during pregnancy, but with my daughter I lost 40 pounds in the first 8 weeks.  With my son, I took 8 mg of Zofran as needed.  I don't feel like the morning sickness was as bad with him, but this time around, it is kicking my tail.  So, I have two questions.  My OB prescribed 4 mg of Zofran and it seems like it only works if the morning sickness is just minor nausea (in which really, I wouldn't even justify taking the darn drug!).  It seemed to really work with my son, but it is doing NOTHING this time.  Is it because of the lower dosage possibly?  I guess I am asking what dosage others seem to be on.

Also, with my son, I had horrific constipation at the beginning.  I am wondering if there is a connection to the Zofran and the constipation.  This time it has been manageable, but I'm wondering if the lower dose is no wreaking as much havoc as the larger dose.  I am even on progesterone suppositories, so I figured it would be worse, but it hasn't been!

Sorry about the book!  Thanks!

Last pg, I took 4mg of Zofran daily and still vomited almost every day. One of the side effects is constipation, but since things are looser during early pg for me, it actually balanced me out. I did get a "zofran headache" almost daily. This time, I'm not seeing anyone yet & my mom had lots of zofran left from her cancer treatments last year, so I am taking 8mg as needed, which has been a lot less. I am just not as sick this time. No vomiting, no headache. Somewhat constipating, but since I'm not taking it all the time, it's not constant. I did take some Miralax one day & that helped some. You could call & see if they'll give you a higher dose or if it's okay to take two pills at once. The ones I'm taking are labeled as "12 hour".

My prescription is 8 mg every 4 hours. I don't take it that often because we just can't afford for me to. It helps, but I'm still getting sick. I imagine if I took it more often, it would help more. I was getting to be too much of a zombie and not holding anything down. Now I'm more functional.

I'm totally with you on taking meds, especially while pregnant. But I've been down this road before and let it go on  way too long. And I was really like a zombie. I was grumpy with my kids and barely able to move. I just couldn't keep going like that.

With my son I started on 4mg but it just didn't cut it. 8mg made all the difference and I found I needed to take it much less. It is HORRIBLY constipating and this time around I am taking something for the constipation and it actually helps with the nausea and has made all the difference. Again, this time I started on 4mg but it wasn't helping much so again I'm up to 8mg and it seems to work so much better.

Hope you feel better soon.

I got Zofran, took it two days and had to stop. The constipation was horrendous ( I hadn't had any before taking the Zofran) and I also go the horrible headaches. Unfortunately, I decided the side effects were just not worth the break from the nausea/vomiting. Mine was labeled one pill every 24 hrs. I'll have to check the mg... I'm comfy in bed right now though wink1.gif
