I avoided the dentist until I was fairly certain that my son could emotionally handle the experience. I'm not convinced he is fully there yet but he has matured some so his very first dental appt is Monday. I too believe in good oral health saves money down the road.....and pain. I let myself be talked into what I think is an unnecessary root canal but I did have a broken tooth that had a big cavity. I want my kids to avoid that. We will avoid amalgams and flouride but do the rest.

I started taking my DS at around 3 yrs.  They are kind pushy and want xrays more often than I feel is necessary.  I tell them straight out we are coming for a cleaning and that is it!!  I also tell them I do not want the fluoride treatment and they try to talk me in to it.  Luckily DS has great teeth so far-no cavities.  We get a cleaning once every 8 months or so.  Just recently, I had a root canal due to a crack in my tooth from an old filing.  Then 2 crowns.   I am in my 40's and this was the first thing I have had since my childhood.  My parents did not take care of our teeth well and I really wish they would have.  Our childhood dentist was great about filling up our mouth with huge amalgam fillings.  I wanted to get them all removed but b/c they are so big I might need crowns.  So luckily, I do not have any health issues due to the amalgams but many do. 

So I would definitely take my kids to the dentist but some can be pushy.  I would do regular cleaning and bite wings maybe once a year.  If you can I would find a mercury free dentist.  If they had a kids one around here thats where I would take my son.
