Okay, lets start this with me saying that I am BY NO MEANS a doctor. I was NERVOUS about doing it myself... but I was SO sick of the weight gain, the mood swings, the feelings of being pregnant... etc. etc. etc.
I called the doctor about a month ago, and they had a waiting list for 3-7 months to become a regular patient for my OBGYN again. She is a very popular doctor, and I wouldn't trust anyone else with birthing my babies. I love her, and so do a lot of other women (look at that waiting period!) Frustrated at the waiting time... I decided to call planned parenthood... I don't have insurance, but I figured they would be a LOT less expensive. I called and was told the procedure is $100.00 upfront... and I can make payments for the rest? WTF? Planned parenthood... All you have to do is yank the T shaped birth control from my uterus through my cervix through my vagina. Really!? $100.00 + for that!? I paid less to get the damn thing inserted.
Anyhow, I started reading up online about how to remove the Mirena IUD by myself, or with the help of my husband.
So, today was my last straw... after weeks of extreme fatigue and phantom kicks without a "YOU ARE PREGNANT" HPT result, I decided today after being nauseated, exhausted, grouchy, moody, and incredibly bloated I decided today is the day that this IUD comes out.
Now, If I would have paid $100.00 + for this procedure in the doctors office, I'd be pissed as hell, and it would have been a complete and utter waste of money (for me). Everyone can have a different experience, but for me... easy as pie. I honestly believe that some doctors instill the fear of having a problem to the point of women fearing the removal whether it be in the doctors office or on your bed.
If you want to know how I did it, I shall tell you... Don't take my advice as anything other than a woman fed up with this piece of plastic.
First off.... if you are overweight, like... myself... Don't try any other way than lying down. Trust me when I say... I tried just about every other way.
Lay down on your bed, lean over and insert item A into item B (A. Hand, B. Vagina) Go as far back as possible and locate the string.
(If you can't find the string... go to the doc or ask your significant other to help you...) Once you have located the string, make sure you have a decent grip... Don't try to pull in order to get the grip.... it is a slippery sucker... so do your best to get a firm hold without yanking. Now... slowly... SERIOUSLY... slowly... pull gently on the strings and you will notice that it slips out VERY easily. Keep going slow... It doesn't hurt... and in about 15 -30 seconds... There it is... a 3/4" little T shaped device with a string in the palm of your hands.
I have felt slight cramping... and very, very little spotting. The cramping is not enough to get any pain meds... but you can still notice it.
IF YOU DON'T HAVE FULL CONFIDENCE -- DON'T DO IT... I'm just letting other women know that it is possible...and I AM JUST FINE. I will post back tomorrow, and continue each week.
GOOD LUCK!
