Transitioning 4.5 y.o. to her own bed: suggestions? Advice?

Hello All!

I want my 4.5 year old to be able to (1) fall asleep by herself - right now my husband or I have to lay by her until she conks out.  and (2) stay in her own bed all night.  She is afraid of the dark so we put in a night light AND her big sister sleeps in the top bunk so she is not in her room all alone!

Anyone been through this and can send me suggestions or advice?  I believe small steps is the way to go ...  thank you for any help ;)

My son is 4y4m old and we still have to sit in the room with him until he falls asleep.  For a while we were able to sit in the hallway, but then he just really needed us with him.  We gave him a special flashlight to keep in bed with him, and he has his lovey.

I just try not to force it.  If this is what he needs right now, it's okay.  I mean, it won't be like this forever.  (Right?)

Wish I could offer more help!  Hopefully others will chime in.
