Reading Supplementation for a 6 year old boy

Hello All!

My son, who is 6 years old, is in need of some supplemental reading instruction.  Summer is coming up and I'd like to do something fun yet instructional with him at home.  Any thoughts on what has worked in the past?

He's a very tactile, kinesthetic learner.

Thanks!

Is he currently reading, but needs encouragement, or does he need to learn to read?

At six, I used a lot of the materials available at the library-- mine has the hooked on phonics and similar programs available.

I'll also say that "write to read" is a valuable tool, where you have him keep a journal over the summer.

In his words, he can read "little words."  He's in a Montessori primary class, lagging behind his peers (not that this really matters to me), but does seem to have some hesitation, or suspicion about reading.  He doesn't seem to enjoy it much.  He just began the consonant blending boxes at school.

He is doing very well in mathematics, practical life, cultural life and socially he is a leader in the classroom.  It's just reading he struggles in.

In school he does the Waseca Reading Program.  http://www.wasecabiomes.org/language/reading-program/

I love ProgressivePhonics.com.  They have downloadable readers that you can print out or use as e-books.  Totally free, and a cozy way to teach reading-- you read funny little books together, with him reading the words in large font, and you reading the rest.  There are associated worksheets too, but we didn't find we needed them.
