Dipping my toe into a controversial topic--vaccines - Page 2

Pertussis is a bacteria and not a virus, so yes, the vaccine is less effective. But it is a numbers thing, the more people you have vaccinated against it, the less likely it will effect the truly vulnerable in society, babies and those who can't receive the vaccine. It's only like 75 percent effective-- but that is better then nothing.

Anyway, I agree it is best to talk to a professional, or a variety of professionals about your particular situation. Sure, vaccine inserts are scary, but so are inserts for every medicine...

Every single peer reviewed research study on vaccinations have said over and over and over again that they're safe, effective and while small numbers of people may have reactions to the ingredients of the vaccinations, overall, the vaccinations do far more good than bad!

i find it insulting and ignorant for anyone to say my unvaxed child puts the whole community at risk. it would also be ignorant for me to come on here and start spouting off that people who vax put my kids in danger and are they are in the wrong for doing so. i could go into a long tirade about why i feel this post is invalid and not well written but i will just simply say you vaccinate because you feel you are protecting your children and i dont vaccinate because i feel i am protecting my children. that is the simple bottom line here. to argue who is better or right is pointless and redundent.

After a lot of research, and because we live in a city, our kids go to daycare, will go to public school, and I do have a ton of respect for my pediatrician, who is very open minded about things like antibiotics and alternative medicine and just really treats me with a lot of respect which I appreciate - but is decidedly pro-vax (though willing to modify the schedule if I'm uncomfortable) ... We did vax DS. I mean, he will be going to public school soon enough anyway...

I just can't believe how many vaccines kids get these days, compared to when we were children. Measles, mumps, rubella, whooping cough and polio - all that seems standard and I personally do believe there is a public health obligation to vaccinating our kids against these preventable diseases. But - chicken pox?! And the others that I don't even know. And the hepatitis thing for newborns?! We didnt do that one, actually. I've honestly never even had a flu shot.

The whole thing freaks me out. Its hard to know who to trust and I just really feel lucky that I have a great pediatrician who has helped me work through some (not all) of the confusion.

Hard to bring up this topic without emotions and controversy though - and I thought I was stepping into challenging territory with my post about sleeping arrangement long ago smile.gif

Yes!  And I don't know if it was even normal to get them as infants (in the 80s).  We were not vaccinated until my youngest sister was 5.

I believe it is 48 doses of vaccines by age 2 if you vax on schedule.

I will say 4 pediatricians told me none of my DDs reactions could be from vax and they were wrong. I can't trust mainstream peds now. We went through absolute hell on earth and if one of them were honest and said "Yes It is the vax you should stop" I would have more respect for them...

That never happened though. I kept firing Drs and seeing specialist and it was repeated over and over IT IS NOT THE VACCINES. Then I had enough and finally stopped vaxing at 9 m/o...within a few months an amazing thing happened...my DDs intestinal bleeding had stopped. Then her seizures stopped.

Very VERY slowly she has been healing and even though she still gets sick a lot she is doing a lot better. She has also been diagnosed with multiple food allergies which we have none in either side of the family.

You can't imagine all the pain she was in, you can't imagine all the crying day after day to no avail. I still have some type of PTSD from her first year of life. I cry anytime I think about her first year of life.

Now I am not saying vax is not effective, I haven't figured that one out yet, but for my DD they weren't. I do believe some kids have reactions and some "non typical" reactions and that these go unreported. I'm not sure about autism or anything else and think GMO foods play a big role in increase of disease and allergies, but I can't say vax does not either.

I will not vax any more of my kids. I feel so lucky everyday that she did not have a more serious reaction and die or have brain damage. We still don't know for sure if all the seizures will have effected her but she is very bright for her age so I am hoping she will be OK.

I found Dr. Sear's Vaccine Book to have a lot of information that was helpful for me.  In case anyone's interested here's a link:

http://www.amazon.com/The-Vaccine-Book-Decision-Parenting/dp/0316017507

We still haven't made concrete decisions about vax, though we won't be doing any vax in the hospital.

It's been awhile since I was looking into vax, but I definitely question rotovirus and chicken pox.  Our state has a website that will tell you which vax are "required" for public school.  Something else you may want to look up if that pertains to you.

Oh and also I have had pro vax people tell me I should continue to vax anyway. I will not kill my child to try and add to "herd immunity". I hope we can at the very least all agree that if a child has serious vax reactions they should not be vaxed...

As far as effectiveness goes for my DD she had rotovirus 4x and was fully vaxed for it. That's the only "VPD" she's gotten but when she was being vaxed she was always sick with viruses, bronchitis, sinus infections, ear infections (had 7 in 5 months after an isolated HiB shot after never having one ear infection in her life) etc. Out ped now has a theory that my DDs body fought itself when injected with vax and that is why this happened also causing her food allergies. I will never know for sure though.

I AGREE WITH EVERYTHING SHE SAID (the rundown at the top on vaccines)ABOUT VACCINES EXCEPT.....I AM TERRIFIED of ANOTHER vaccine reaction. and I DO SUPPORT the autism-vaccine link. My child severely regressed after the MMR and a year later she is still healing. IDK if she will ever be what she was supposed to be......

Could we go back to being a closed group?  That comment ^ is at least the third comment by someone who hasn't previously commented in our group and has only made one post.  We should be able to discuss topics like this without the extra people...we have a great DDC group and I'm glad we can feel comfortable asking questions like this amongst each other.  I just can't take the random anonymous crashers.

ACTUALLY GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT. for 8-12 yr olds the pertussis vaccine is 24% effective. and I give that 24% to kids to have clean homes and wash their hands! LOL

I'm strictly lurking on this thread now ;-) but I would second/third/whatever this motion! It's much nicer to keep things more private.

yes, I think we should go back to private. the DDCCs are interrupting our mostly respective convos with sensational language, which is never helpful.

I don't have much to contribute to the debate (other than that I completely understand the passion on all sides), but I am glad that we are able to discuss it here, and even disagree.

Yes, please.  Also, since we'll all be having our babies soon I'd like to be able to share pictures and details without worrying about "strangers".  I know technically we're all strangers, but y'all know what I mean.

Do remember that others can still read, just not post...

Oh really?  Hmm...good to know!  I thought if we closed it that people couldn't read.  Bummer.

I didn't open the group I'll have to PM them

Sorry that was me that opened it so a lady could get in. There was a bug or something. Its closed now.

I had no idea people could still read. oops.

IIRC, there are two levels of closed?  One allows people to read and not post, one makes it totally private (like the uc forum).  I've ddcc to lurk, and forgot that I wasn't "authorized" to post because I wasn't a member, but I totally could read anything.

Yeah if you were to search for casmer in google you find this DDC and could read it, even though it was closed.  I just don't like to read spammy-type stuff.  Especially when it comes to controversial topics.

Thanks ladies!
