Newborn, pertussis and sodium ascorbate - any info would be appreciated.

Apologies if there is a thread already on this but I have a severe case of baby brain and are sleep deprived...

I need info on dosing a 15 day old newborn (wish I was saying a something-month-old) :( We very unfortunately suspect early stages of pertussis (catarrhal stage)... Partner of the girl next to me in the hospital room had it and he was coughing everywhere! angry.gif I am so pissed beyond belief.

I am BF'ing and I'm not sure how much to give myself or the babe..... Is it only SA or do I need Vit A and D and anything else? Any herbs?

Advice would be very, very appreciated. I read somewhere it was 375mg/kg of body weight (think it was on beyond vaccination) but not sure if the info was correct.

TIA!

this is the best article I've seen on it http://vaccinationcouncil.org/media/The-Vitamin-C-Treatment-of-Whooping-Cough.pdf  it will involve some math.  Please read the whole article.

eta, I'm so sorry that you are dealing with this.  Hugs and prayers.

What is the doctor saying? This disease is very dangerous to newborn.

I can't believe the hospital allowed a coughing person in the room. I would file a complain with their infection control.

One way to protect the newborn is to make sure everyone around is vaccinated.

When my brother had his  baby recently, the hospital vaccinated him and his wife for free and no one who is not vaccinated is allowed around my nephew.

I hope your baby feels better soon.

Having every one around your baby will not protect them.  Since the vaccine only helps reduce the damage from the bacterial toxins and doesn't kill the bacteria, you will be surrounding your baby with asymptomatic people who are more likely to actually have pertussis bacteria spewing from their mouths.  I would rather have people coughing and keep a distance then be breeding grounds and not know it.  The original poster has a head start because she knows that there was a coughing person near her baby, if he had had the vaccine (and it worked at all) he might have still been exposing her baby and she wouldn't have a clue.

I understand that it's a new born and you have to have your say, but there are two ways to look at it.

Questions about SA and vitamins belong in health and healing; though to be honest, I wouldn't want to give a 15-day old anything other than BM without guidance from a professional.

I don't want to offend suffering parents, but I really need to give my opinion. I strongly believe whooping cough is being misdiagnosed. Foam in bedding and baby cribs is being treated with toxic flame retardants. I strongly believe children are suffering from toxic flame retardants not pertussis.

The flame retardant chemicals are toxic, but they also off gas and form particulates in the air that is much like asbestos. They will clog the mouth, throat and lungs even in adults so obviously infants are highly susceptible. The best thing to do is to remove the child from the room entirely, have him sleep on a bed that is not made from foam and has no absolutely no chemical treatment. The body can kick a lot of it out of the system, the only way to accelerate this is to have be outside breathing fresh air. If your child is sneezing or coughing, he is kicking it out of his system, don't let him wipe it back onto himself. I hope this helps.

Thanks so much guys!!

Just to answer quickly.... Babe is sleeping on a 100% organic wool mattress (we co-sleep). I'm sure he's not suffering from any congestion due to toxins, but I do appreciate the thought.

The coughing partner was coming to pick up his wife and newborn to take them home.. (I hope their baby is ok) not only did he cough everywhere but he would go into the patients only bathroom and cough/vomit there! I am livid. I tried to air out the room however there is only so much that can be aired out in a hospital.

I intend to do the sodium ascorbate treatment as well as any other remedies until it reaches a point where we need medical help. For me that would be the characteristic coughing fit. First coughing fit and we're off to the hospital. Not taking any chances. Unfortunately up until then the hospital won't admit you as it's not become life threatening (yet). As far as they would be concerned, it's just a runny nose/small coughs and treatments such as oxygen/fluids wouldn't be of any benefit right now.

I will be filing a huge complaint with the hospital... I'm so upset. We always keep our babies at home for a few months because of WC and then we are exposed in the hospital. I feel like we had no chance to keep our little boy safe.

Taken from the article...

Antibiotics can, however, make the pertussis more severe by releasing LPS from other gram-negative bacteria during the “die-off” that happens with antibiotics on the gut.

Would fresh garlic work in the same way? I've been eating 2 cloves a day... Should I stop?

I will do the 375mg/kg dosing for the babe. So is that 375mg every 6 hours? DS is 4kg. I'm also taking 10,000 IU of vitamin D every day, but I'm unsure of how much makes its way through the milk.

Thank you so much.

I just saw this! Sorry... I wasn't sure where to post and feel a little desperate :(

I don't have any medical professional who will do anything other than antibiotics (standard protocol). I'm giving the babe as much BM as is possible.

i believe its not being diagnosed at all...drs are too quick to assume children are vaxed and since they assume said vaccine works, the assumption is, it couldn't possibly be WC.  And drs don't think to look for pertussis in adults.......And it goes the other way around, too...a non vaccinated child might be  poked and prodded much more than a vaccinated child, needless testing, invasive lab draws, etc etc....

Please read the link upthread - it is very through. Do not be concerned with side effects - the worst would be loose stools. Hope your baby improves quickly!
